I like the Modern a lot.
They are certainly less like a "See you Jimmy" tartan but weren't available when I was getting a kilt and I hope the two I have will see me my days now.

They adopted me and made me an honorary member of their kindred and so I wear the MacLeod which is of Norse origin while retaining my Scottish roots to return the honor to them. Make sense?
MacLeod is of Norse roots? I did not know that! I, too, am MacLeod. Thanks for the information!

I have no specific tartan that belongs to my family since I am not from Scotland.
I feel that all tartans have a heritage, that if I wear, I will be in honor. Thus I wouldn't mind wearing any tartan. Enables be to show respect for all the tartans

Im also with Jock on this one. I will only wear the Watson tartan as its my family colours. Before I bought my own on I would hire Bucanan as it was loosly related to Watson.

I voted to wear only one clan tartan. Being Macdonald I can choose from many different ones. I would add that I may consider some of the universal ones like braveheart and various scotland ones for my kilt. Having said that I would only go to those if I had exhausted my choices for Macdonald. As I am not rich I doubt that I will own any but one or two Macdonald kilt at any given time.

    Hey all,

Out of personal preference I would not wear any tartan that I do not have a direct genealogical connection to. The only exceptions would be for special tartans to which I have a connection such as the two law enforcement tartans. Beyond that, I would not feel right.

Yes, the hunting tartan is really nice. I will admit that the clan tartan is a bit 'garish' in modern colours , but I have mine in Lochcarron ancient colours which is a bit easier on the eye (in fact the colours are much softer than in the photo). I'd love one in weathered colours for day wear.
The Kilt is my delight !

    Aye I would,
I'm a MacDonald, but have MacMillan, MacGowan, MacQueen, Murray, Robertson, and saffron (Irish!) roots, but until I win the lottery I'll stick with me direct Clan tartan, and the old regimental kilt.

P.S. I like the Buchanan kilt, it is vibrant and I used to twit an old Buchanan pal by asking what batteries he used to get that bright colour....won't type his response.

    I'm still figuring it out

I voted "only specific bloodlines" because I have no idea exactly how far my clan extends, and because I'm also tempted to wear some of the "generic" tartans because I like them.

I'm still figuring out what branch of the MacDonalds I'm descended from, so right now I'm going with the Modern (can't go wrong there!). However, I've found dozens of MacDonald tartans, and I like them, but I would probably only wear them if an ancestor of mine was in that particular branch. I like a number of other clan tartans, but I don't want to disrespect their clan, my ancestors, or get mistakenly labeled as something/someone I'm not.
