Honestly, I only vaguely know who these people are. All I know is the guy with the sporran is gonna come over here and be classy, and I figure that's enough, right?

No, but the thread seems to be giving people haddocks.

OK, everyone. Please remember that we all agreed to behave as gentlemen and gentlewomen. The bickering has gone on way too long, and closing this circus down is becoming much more likely.

We can see brown and black leather mixed in the MacLeay prints, so I don't think we need to suspect anything newer than that.

I do indeed understand that and I have some sympathy for that point, however there are ways of voicing those opinions in a courteous way. I may also add that there are those of us who consider positions of power and privilege can, in the right circumstances, be used for good purposes. As in this case. Why be so grudging about it?

The pros and cons about power and privilege etc. are not appropriate to this thread.
Most countries have a "first family" in one form or another. As Jock has hinted, ours has a concept of noblesse oblige and work hard in varying kinds of service.
Some of them wear the kilt in circumstances that are considered appropriate to the occasion. Some of us think that this particular occasion is very appropriate.

I could be wrong, but as far as I know the Earl of Wessex has only ever worn the Balmoral (restricted) tartan.

Well, he did wear a kilt of Royal Stuart to his sister's wedding, at which he was a page.

Sorry, my fault. I meant as an adult. Unlike his brother, the Duke of Rothsay, who has many kilts, I would not be surprised if the Earl of Wessex only had one kilt.
