Still I'd like to see it more readily availiable, if it's an official tartan then the rights to it should not be private.

This is ridiculous, same sort of thing happened in the State of Maine as I recall, and the designer got rich from inadvertent copyright infringements committed by the unsuspecting. Time to have a public official Ontario tartan and if necessary to get the old one decertified. If the current one ever was certified it smells like a political payoff- although having said that I'm helpless to do anything about it.

I'm not sure that's entirely true. Design a tartan, register it and then it's just a letter writing campaign.

Like I said the owner, as I understand, was pleased that I chose to have a kilt made in this tartan, furthermore I did not have to pay a premium (other than custom weave). However why F&K cannot offer it along side all the other provincial tartans is where my issue lies. F&K would've been oodles cheaper being 10 or 12oz and coming for B.C.. Then again Scottish Imports (copyright owner) does carry the tartan in a lighter weight. This I did not know until this thread and CMcG's post. My original specification to my kilt maker was in a regimental weight, our only option was custom weave in 16 oz.
Scottish Imports is 20 minutes away from me and on the way to Dunnville where I was headed tosay (that was until my hot-water heater crapped out). I was going to stop in and look around, perhaps buy a tie in Official Ontario seeing as it's Tartan day. It would've been the first time actually seeing the tartan I ordered so many months ago.

RCMP tartan
I tried to post a couple of pics of my cousin's Royal Canadian Mounted Police kilt a couple of days ago, but my post appears to be lost in the limbo that is the intarwebz. So, trying again
This kilt is an 8 yd, knife-pleated to the sett. My cousin is a current member of the RCMP, and a former Highland dancer. One of my brothers is borrowing this to wear in a family wedding next month.

I was fishing! Anyway, off-topic from Ontario problems, here's the link of the day from the CBC, deals in equal parts with Tartan Day and Canadian tartan news and issues, but it's all Canadian content so I decided to post it here:

At least there is a push to have Maple Leaf recognized finally.

I'd have to say "Maple Leaf" -- the tartan in my only tartan kilt so far. I purchased it from Steve to commemorate attaining Canadian citizenship last year.
I see our local Jo-Anne's has all the provincial and territorial tartans, as well as several regimentals in their stock of tartan wool. Unfortunately, it's all far too light to make a kilt. Drat the luck...I was thinking of the X-Kilt.
Not the official Canadian tartan? I say we rise up as Canadians with righteous indignation and have a letter-writing campaign!
