    Yes.

My question is, did your amigos give their answers aloud, or did they write them down, secretly, so that no one could share answers or be influenced by his neighbor's answers?

I propose that the next time your mates assemble, the ladies should be quizzed with similar questions. I'd imagine that their responses would be very enlightening.

I hadn't realised that we were not "on topic", Jock. Don't you think it is now time to admit that such a small and definitely un-representative sample of opinion as far as the people of Scotland is concerned has little or no validity. Which is really what I have been trying to get across despite the irrelevant forays into other matters.
To go back to my original post, the reason was not to start a class war or debase your thread. It was simply to point out that the whole premise was flawed in that few, if any, of the participants concerned lived and worked in Scotland, a situation completely at odds with your oft expressed views about just who is and is not entitled to wear a kilt. It is something I believe should be clearly understood to avoid any misunderstanding.

Err.... not to stick my head in the middle of this, but I do have to point out this quote from Jock, in post #1 of this thread...

So not a fair representation of Scotland by any means...

Those of us who can read do understand it.

I don't remember seeing a sign anywhere stating: "You will now read a poll of all Scots, living and dead, from the whole country, all of whose opinions will be treated equally." This was a group of Jock's chums who were asked a few questions and who answered them. I doubt any of them stood up on the dining room table and shouted, "I'm speaking for the whole country! Listen to me!" If anyone here is looking for a scientific poll of a "true sample" of the population of Scotland, then he or she needs to devise such a poll, get some funding for it, and make it happen, then post the results here. I'd guarantee that there are a few folks who would argue with the results.

Phil had you taken the trouble to read my first post properly instead of getting on your high horse and galloping off to war, you will find that on that point I agree with you and have said so in post ONE!

What this thread demonstrates very strongly (thank you Jock for starting it) is that there is strong disagreement on a number of points about the kilt, where and how it should be worn, not only between resident Scots and those in other places, such as North America, but between Scots themselves (young and old, the great and the good and others, those resident all their lives and those born or living outside). In short, the idea that there is one uniform consensus within Scotland, or even within the Highlands, is one of those myths relating to the kilt and to tartan that should be consigned to the waste paper bin, or garbage can.

I do not meaning to say that there is not an appropriate way to wear the kilt. I am only addressing the obvious point that significant disagreements exist.

Well I'm glad we got that one cleared up at last, Jock. And would you have thought when you posted your original thread that it would have attracted 1,942 views and 75 posts, so well done.

I see that 8 of your friends don't want 'outsiders' to wear the kilt. How would they react if they see an outsider wearing the Kilts?

I don't know if the Scots I came into contact with in Scotland were just being courteous, but for the most part I received nothing but compliments even after they realized I was a Yank. A few even treated me to a wee dram or two, which my poor wife was at a loss to understand why.
