How were you introduced to kiltdom?

When I was ery young (6-ish) I found a plaque with the MacLachlan clan crest mounted on MachLachlan tartan. I asked my father about it, and he told me that he had gotten it when he was stationed in England (USAF). He then told me a little about the family tracing back to Scotland, etc.

From that point on I had this attraction to kilts and Scotland. It was revived in my High School years, when I joined marching band. Unfortunately, our band had no pipes, but one of the bands near us did (Glasgow High School in Glasgow Kentucky), and we saw them perform often (in full pipe band get-up, though they only use pipes briefly at the beginning of their show). That got me wanting a kilt again, and not long after graduating high school I found this place.

Introduced to kilts by birth I guess!

First time I wore one would be for my cousin's wedding around 20 years ago. I'd have been well under 10 at the time. I loved it! When I was in elementary school I was in the country dancing team and had to wear a kilt to the championships (or something). Fell in love with them even more.

When I was growing up I liked to hire a kilt whenever I had the reason. Weddings, graduation etc. But I never really had the money to afford a 'tank'. I have a decent job now and have finally gotten around to fullfilling this particular dream and ordered my kilt 2 weeks ago.

In the future I am looking forward to trying out some of these new fangled poly viscose kilts. Exciting kilted times ahead methinks.

Watching the old Tech TV show one night in '03 I saw Patrick wearing his Utilikilt, my first thought was that I need one of those. So happens I was going to be ini Seattle that summer for my old battalion reunion. I stopped by headquarters just to see the UK's, what a mistake. I suppose an even bigger mistake was trying one on. While modeling it for Uncle Otto so he could check the fit I heard 'nice legs' from a young lady coming down the stairs. Not sure if it was her compliment or the feel of the kilt, but it wasn't hard getting out the plastic. Now 5 UK's, 3 stillwaters, 2 USAkilts and 1 USMC tarten Alexis Malcolm I'm an addict.

Same here, but it was in '02. And the second time, not the first. The first time I saw Patrick in his UK, I was still in Pants Dogma Mode. The second time I saw him in it, something clicked. I started with UK's, then crossed over with USA Kilts and Pittsburgh Kilts, then started on eBay.

Tomorrow's the Irish festival. I'm going kilted ... something I never would have decided in September 2002. Life is good.

This is an old thread. I wonder where some of the early posters have gone now? Anyhow, I kind of wanted something I could wear like the ladies skirts. They always looked so comfortable. But I wasn't interested in wearing "women's clothes". Then back around the time this thread was started, my wife and I started getting back together after an extended seperation, and we went to The Richmond highland games. We were walking around together, with me drooling over all of the kilts, and I guess I hadn't been paying much attention to the way my wife had been looking at them also, because out of the blue, she says, "you need to get a kilt." She didn;t have to ask twice. The first place we headed straight to the UK tent. I tried on a UK original, but she didn't like it, and said, you need to get a "plaid kilt". (we learned it was called tartan later) I then made one of the biggest mistakes of my kilted life, I went and ordered a kilt package from "the infamous Clansman Knitwear". When the delivery date came and went with no kilt, and a lot of excuses and unkept promises, I ordered a Blackwatch Sportkilt, then a Macneil casual from Scottishkilts.net(both of which arrived weeks before the first one I ordered. By then I was getting pretty angry and vindictive, so I went looking for somewhere to post and warn other's about "Clansman". That's how I found Xmarks and have been here ever since.

Like many others, I was always interested in my scottish roots, even if they are on the maternal line. My mother threatened to get me a kilt when I was a kid, but I resisted(afraid to stick out too much, I guess). Years later my own son went kilted to high school, which got me to thinking about it as a garment, not a costume. We went to the Stone Mountain Games a couple years ago and ended up joing the local chapter of the House of Gordon. My 11-y/o daughter was thrilled to discover all these "relatives". Mom and I split the cost of a 4-yard wool Gordon Modern for my son, and in doing the homework on that I started thinking about one for me, mainly for special events. With my son planning a visit for the SMHG this year, I pulled the trigger on an 8-yard trad. Then I found X-Marks and here we are.

I found myself indulging in a lot of overspending for stuff that I had just put off too long one of them was buying a kilt in my family (clan) tartan.

It was one of those if you only had one day to live what would you do. After serving in Iraq each day thereafter was a gift of God's grace.

I wear my kilt when I'm with my daughter Kelli Elizabeth and tell her of the proud history her family has. If it sinks in then it does, if not...

I wished to wear a kilt of my family tartan for my wedding.. So I hit the web to research how to do it right the first time!!! That search led me here, and the jonesing began....

Well.... It has been something that I have wanted for some time...... I think I wanted my first kilt when I was 18. My grandmother had gotten me a hardbound copy of "The Scottish Chiefs" and a week later after I had read it I wad to have one. I must admit I really didn't look very hard, just a couple of places really. I asked around a couple of the BBS's I subscribed too as well, however, I never found anything. So there I was 16 years later and my friend Joanna tells me her other freind Tim is comming home on leave from the airforce. All this guy wears is kilts....... I was jealous...... this guy has got more than just a few kilts, including this leather thing manufactured by Union Kilts. Wow. Well a year later I finnaly got my first kilt. I am happy. I am going to order two SWK's tonight and put them on my credit card. I think I might have a slight kilt addiction. Anyway. It has been a long time comming but I am here.
