Nathan , I can certainly relate . I have ran into this same problem a few times with Ebay listed sizes being wrong on kilt jackets .
Fortunately , when I contacted the sellers and made them aware of the problem , most of them readily agreed to accept a return of the jacket and a full refund .
However , in the event of " push back " from a seller , I made Ebay and PayPal aware of the situation and it got resolved immediately . I did the same thing as you and double checked with a tape measure and informed all those involved of the " listed measurement " versus the " real measurement .
Hopefully , you should be able to return them and get a full refund . Sadly , this doesn't help the gift situation but it should get your money back .

They have agreed to refund the purchase but we haven't discussed the shipping costs.
The real question is whether I lose money on the shipping/return shipping! They're quite nice but oh so wee!

Bummer, Nathan!
It's one of those odd Ebay things, jacket sizing. There are Ebay sellers who regularly deal with vintage clothing and give precise measurements. They know what to measure and how to measure it. I've never gone wrong with that type of seller.
At the other extreme are sellers who know nothing about it, and don't list size at all, or list a vague size such as "medium", or say something like "it fits my brother-in-law and he's about a medium" or what have you.
There are some in the middle, who will try to do various measurements but don't really know what they're doing. You never know what you're going to get from them.
Ditto kilts. I very often message people selling kilts telling them how to calculate a kilt's waist size (the ratio of the Beast). Sometimes these sellers will measure, calculate, and add the info to their listing, most often not.
Fantastic buy there MacGummerait! What a gorgeous jacket. Oh to be that size again (in college I wore a 40... now I'm 48/50).

Here's yet another false "military" listing.
You see it all the time on Ebay: ordinary civilian things being listed as "military", nearly always "officer's".
As you can see the sporran is an ordinary civilian Evening Dress sporran, and missing its tassels.
It might have belonged to a (former?) Gordon Highlanders officer, but it itself has nothing to do with that regiment.
Besides, the listing implies that the cantle is silver, but it is only silver-plated, I'm quite sure, due to the oft-seen MADE IN SCOTLAND stamp which always used to appear on silver-plated cantles offered by the mainstream sporran makers.

The same seller is selling various other civilian items listed as being military which also belonged to this same officer, as well as some actual military items. BTW the battledress jackets listed appear to be postwar pattern but are listed as WWII.

Latest swipe from ebay. I could have walked to England and gotten it sooner (thanks, U.S. Customs), but it was totally worth the wait. Especially since the doublet and shipping combined were less than $100! Anyone know what the hooks on the bottom are called and where I can get a couple? I'd like to add 1 or 2 to keep the belt in place.
