Cousins from the auld land are visiting this season and we are tasting/imbibing/consuming Bunnahabhain Eirigh na Greine this evening (a few more yet to come, I am told). Definitely a duty-free malt from Islay, we all agree, and intended for the off-shore market. Having said that, we also agree that this is a good dram for the late afternoon and before the evening meal. It's a gentle Islay, in other words -- to be tried and added to your collection with a quarter of it's litre now given place here at An Cala.

Was introduced to this last night by my daughter (good girl). It is probably the best whisky I've ever drunk, and there have been a few. Unfortunately, it's incredibly hard to find (this bottle's been in her husband's house for 15 years) and if one can, oh the price.

I happened to find a 12-year-old double cask bottling not too long ago. I still have about 2/3 of the bottle left. As I recall, it was very smooth, nice vanilla and almond aftertaste. I haven't partaken of any spirits since I started medical treatment around Halloween. I'm looking forward to New Year's Eve when I will have a sip or two to toast the new year.

We popped round to see a dear friend last evening and in the process I reacquainted myself with a very distant and long lost taste in the form of Chivas Regal, a blended whisky of an almost past age. The brand, a blend, was regarded as a top rate blend in the time when blended whisky ruled the roost and single malts were almost unknown. It was magnificent then and still is now and available. I recommend it to all.

I am just now in receipt of Laphroaig 10, a Christmas gift from my girlfriend's mom and which I accepted while kilted up in Royal Stewart. Presumably she is (finally) reciprocating for the bottle of Balvenie Doublewood I gave her on the same occasion, shortly after my girlfriend and I first met years ago, as part of a calculated strategy to win her over (it worked). As previously noted, I have been on an extended tour of Bourbon Land--including a lengthy visit with dear Old Grand Dad 100 and 114 Proof--and so the Laphroaig may be my cue to return from the Hills Of Kentucky back to the Hills Of The Hebrides...
Also was treated to a miniature bottle of Tomatin Legacy, part of a small cache of samplers brought home by a Polish lady friend from the Scotch Whisky Experience in Edinburgh (https://www.scotchwhiskyexperience.co.uk/). An excellent Highland malt, perfect right before her usual and excellent traditional Polish Christmas Eve dinner with baked salmon, crab cakes, prawns, foraged mushroom soup, and two kinds of pierogi.

Not being able to find Bowmore Mariner 15yo anymore, I decided to try something new, 7yo Bearface Canadian whisky. It does have interesting flavours (ascribed to its musical chair casking...)
