    Caps

I was just at my Capitol Area Pipe Smoker's meeting and mentioned this thread to the other fellows at my table.

During the discussion I realized that I didn't know of any of the other local DC area kilt wearers were also pipe smokers. If you are, the other guys in the club wanted me to extend a hearty invitation to all of you to join us in 2 months at our next meeting.

If anyone is interested, let me know.

I know that Prince Albert is one of those cheaper brands, but I don't think I'll be able to afford a new tin of Macbaren when my current one is gone. If I'm going to get a less expensive brand, I'd at least like to get a decent one. Any suggestions?

I just saw Peterson Tobacco's at the Tinder Box. Any words on that brand, too?

Also, what do you guys think of the Tinder Box? Is it a good store to shop at?

I did buy a pipe tool there, and it was only 95 cents. It was the hammered nail type.

    Update

Ok, here is an update on my attempts at pipe smoking.

A few weeks ago, I was given a very nice Kaywoodie pipe by a friend. Along with the pipe was some bulk tobacco. I was eager to give this great pipe a try. After work one day while in the park waiting for my bus, I tried it out. Now, I was given very detailed instructions on how to fill the bowl, tamp, etc. And it was a success. My pipe burned well, and it seemed like I had done everything correct.

I will admit that I wasn't that fond of the tobacco that was given to me. I'm not sure why, though. So, I decided to go up to the Tinder Box yesterday and I bought 2oz of their bulk Wilshire. I just gave this stuff a try, and again, I'm not real pleased.

I believe I've come to the conclusion that pipe smoking is not really for me. I'm not fond of the taste left in my mouth, and the smell left on my clothes, face, etc.

I may try one more variety of tobacco (maybe the Cornell and Diehl Briar Fox) once I can afford to get some, and give it one more go.

My advice would be to let it go. I have nothing against pipe smokers - to each his own. But if you're having unpleasant experiences, why continue to try to get used to it? Besides, with the money you would have spent on pipes and tobacco, you can get more kilts and accessories.

you're probably right, and that makes sense. I think I will just let it go.

Exactly, everyone should follow their own tastes. With pipes, some people such as myself love the flavor our favorite tobacco leaves in our mouths. And I find the after-aroma quite relaxing and comforting. But then, it reminds me of my grandfather. And since my blends tend to be pleasant smelling, those around me often compliment my pipe rather than scowl or discourage it.

But just because it works for me and I find it enjoyable, doesn't mean that everyone will. It may be that it's just right for you at this time of your life. It may never be right for you. But you would have never known had you not tried. I commend you for maintaining and open mind and looking at something for its merits rather than on stereotypes.

Personally, I think that is really what it boils down to. Are we as a society willing to allow people to decide for themselves in an adult manner what is best for them. Had pipe smoking been the addictive nightmare that many would have you believe, Avonlea would have continued despite his not liking the taste or the smell. His addiction to nicotine would over-ride everything. But that's not the case. He tried it, he didn't like it. So what. I tried it and I like it. So what. We're each adults and we each made a choice. Now as adults we will each live with that choice.

Personally, I relish the fact that I still have that freedom to make a choice for myself. And I'm proud of Avonlea for making a choice for himself, no matter what it is.
