Re: Poll: How often do you see kilts worn?
I've never seen anyone dressed in a kilt.
I've been told my grandfather wore his to his "meetings" and when he played the pipes in the parade. However, this was before my time though.

It would have to be less than five around here.

In Seattle, casual kilts are seen everyday, but here on the Oregon coast, I have yet to see one. I keep searching and searching... and will probably do a happy dance if I spot one!

Here I see maybe one or two other gents wearing a traditional tartan kilt per year, and another two who have Utilikilts. I am definately the main kilt wearer in my town.

Mostly I am the one spotted wearing a kilt. I wear one for the opening performances of my wife's theater, Belfast Maskers.
However several friends of mine from the hospital also wear a kilt. This year, they were kilted for their run in the "National Boatbuilding Challenge". It is 4 hours for a team to build a boat from plywood and hand tools then paddle it across Belfast Harbor.

PS I will be kilted again on Christmas night as I join my wife at her temple's annual 'traditional' jewish dinner - at a local Chinese restrauant. My daughter and I will be in Leatherneck Tartan. Dorothy will wear her Jewish Tartan kippot. The rabbi loves it.

As I have a number of Jewish friends I'd like to see a picture of that!

Well it looks like you chaps will still have to venture to Scotland if you want to see a kilt. Even if there is a good chance that it will not be worn by a Scot!
Joking apart, this thread has put my feet firmly back on the ground as I had thought that the kilt was starting to be "the thing" around the world. I suppose it is very easy to get a wrong impression from a website specialising in the kilt filled with enthusiastic world wide kilt wearers.

While we don't see them as much as we like something is changing. Looking at the number of kilt makers associated with this site and compare that to 25 years ago before the "web". It appears to me there are more kilts being made now than in the past. The general population is so large that even with an increase in kilts they are lost in the mass of pants people out there.

Re: Poll: How often do you see kilts worn?
Mike has a good point there. Yes, I seem to be the only kilt wearer in this little town. But if it were not for the internet, I would be going about life up here kiltless, (believing that the only kilt option costs hundreds and hundreds of dollars) never seeing anyone in a kilt, blissfully unaware that just 2 hours south of me is a huge annual Highland Games, and that only an hour north of me is a fine Tartan Museum (and gift shop!). So while this amazing instant communication we have available tells us just how few kilties there are out and about, the fact that there are so many of us tucked away in our little towns to report that fact means kilts are not as rare as they once were. So yes Jock, you're right they are not exactly sweeping the nation over here, they are on the rise!
