It comes down to personal preference... But it is you choice no matter what one says... Lets try to keep in mind not to give the perception of "rules that must be followed" when most is an expression of yourself and your heritage.
With all due respect, it appears that you are arguing a moot point. No one has suggested that there is a "rule" against white hose. Everyone acknowledges that it's a personal choice. The conversation simply revolves around whether white hose represent good taste, Highland traditions, or fit with the aesthetics of a kilt. It will all be personal opinions.

By the same token, it's purely personal preference whether you wear a pair of plaid boxer shorts on your head as a hat. But most folks would agree that it might look a tad ridiculous, yes?

As has been said, to each his own. I caught the drift early on that white hose had the reputation of rental attire, as well as the rampant rumor that white is reserved for the piper.
Regardless, I don't own a pair, and am glad for the flexibility of wearing tartan-complemented tones.

I have worn white socks for years with my red MacDonald kilt for formal evenings, but out and about, have worn grey. I figured white set off the tan of my legs, in a vain sort of way. I now wear a green MacKenzie kilt with bottle green rugby socks, with red flashes, as informal wear. Great colours for the festive season. I wear this most Friday nights to my local pub. Enclosed pic of parading the haggis on Burns night. Hmm, if I knew how to make it bigger....oh no, it's gone too big, and I don't know how I did it. Oh well, enjoy.
