Japan Question

Hello all
I've been looking around the forum for a few days now, very interesting and enlightening place. Sorry that I only recently found it.
I do have a question but I'll give a little intro first. Scold me if you must for not using the intro thread. As a newbie here I'll plead ignorance.
Born and raised in Scotland, SW of Glasgow. Moved to the States in my early twenties and have now spent most of my life here. Currently North of Chicago, (the US Navy dropped me off at Great Lakes). I do venture home almost every year to keep the family happy, and by happy I mean they're happy I'm only there for two weeks. Last thing my Mother said before I left was don't lose the accent and I'm proud to say that I still have most of it.
I have worn my Kilt with Sgian Dubh countless times here in the states with no problems whatsoever. This brings me to my question:

I am going over to Japan for Christmas this year and will be attending a somewhat formal dinner. I do intend to wear my Kilt. Has anyone had any issues wearing the Sgian Dubh in Japan or know of any laws there which prohibit it? It may be okay to plead ignorance as a newbie in a forum but I'd rather not try it against the law or risk insulting another culture.

I'm sure this question has been asked before and I did do a search, however, the size of this forum is pretty impressive and searches came up with too many results.

My guess would be contact the Japanese embassy or the party host either should be able to tell you.

I know I've read a couple of posts here about the kilt itself being well received over there, but I think I might leave the blade at home.

You still qualify for one of those even if you didn't post with the newbies. And this is a welcome from another Scot who was born and raised SW of Glasgow and has lived abroad (in England) since his very early twenties.

I don't know the correct answer to your question but I'd have a hard time believing that a country where they venerate the sword like they do in Japan would have any problems with a wee bit Sgian Dubh

How about a fake sgian... the guys here make sgian don'ts. It's a sgian dubh except with a bottle opener in place of a blade.

from downstate Illinois. I'd second the advice to call the host, or the embassy to check on the proper proceedure for your sgian. Even if you don't get to wear the sgian at least you will be able to wear the kilt.
