Whites of Fife
Greetings from Down Under. I wonder if someone out there can help regarding the origins of the White families in Fife. I've an established genealogy going back to Fife in the early 1700s and am curious about where the name might have started.
Since White is one of the names McGregors took during the proscription of that surname, that's one option. I've heard the same goes for Lamont. But then Fife is hardly the Highlands or the Islands. Or it could be an Anglicised version of a surname like Bain, or something else. Any ideas? Any other Whites from Fife out there?

Well met and welcome new member. I can't help with the family of White query of yours but can offer a hardy, "come on in and visit a while." I hope you get some good information from the group here. Glad to have you with us.

The write-up on Electric Scotland is a pretty good general introduction to this very common name in Scotland, as well as England and Ireland. Notwithstanding the link title, there is not such thing as Clan White'.
