    Home cast Pewter buttons.

Over the past few months I have been working on casting some pewter buttons to dress up my jackets a bit...

I finally got thes Thistle ones done and sewn the first three on my green Argyle jacket. Lead free pewter with a light antique patina and brushed finish. Mold made with high temp silicone from a tie pin ( bigger) and cuff link set from St. Kilda Kilts. Art Deco line thistle... These are a one off for me.... too much work to even consider making any to sell!

I also made some Breton Hermine pewter buttons as well.

Nicely done. Is this your own design or did you start with an existing mold?

I started with a cufflink and tie pin set I purchased from St Kilda Kilts... made the mold with high temp silicone... starting from those pieces... added sprues... a lot of "learning" new processes... then a whole bunch of hand work!

    Bretagne pewter buttons

With Breton (Brittany, France) heritage, I decided to make some buttons for a new jacket by casting Bretagne l'hermine style buttons in pewter... carved one in maple in the 1 inch size I needed, used it to make a mold by pouring high temp silicone over it. After curing I cast 20+ buttons, cleaned off the flash, cleaned them up, applied antiquing bath, and wire brushed them. Took about a week to do. I went for a different look than the PC or Argyle.... My daughter (a tailor) did the alterations to the jacket I ordered. I recieved the jacket Tuesday afternoon and sewed on 14 buttons, wednesday sewed on the remaing 4 on the sleeves. My daughter made the vest, from vintage wool.

    Pictures to follow...

If I may ask ... Are you wearing a cravat/neckcloth in this photo? Looks very nice.
When in doubt, end with a jig. - Robin McCauley
