All references point the Highland hose being cloth at that time.

I just happened to take this pic the other week at the Tartan Weaving Mill in Edinburgh. The plaque states "The Hose are of the old type, tailored from woven cloth and held up with ribbon."

It gives an impression but almost everything about this character is wrong for the person and period it depicts. In terms of the hose, the seam is at the front rather than the back where it should be to allow the cloth to move properly.

I was wondering just how accurate these depictions might be. I think my initial assumptions were along your line of thinking: they'd be an impression rather than historically exact.
