Regulation Prince Charlie jacket and waistcoat

I am about to get a Regulation Prince Charlie for very formal events.

I am leaning towards navy blue with white trim, silver buttons and black lining to go with my AF tartan.

    BUT…

I also fancy a white one that would go with, not only the AF tartan, but also all my other kilts which are mainly a red colour pallet.

If I went with white, what colour for the lining? Black would be ‘universal’ but would it be too stark with the white? I’m thinking red, but that would negate wearing it with the AF kilt. That’s not a big deal b/c I have a black PC now. What about trim? Would red be too much or stick with white?

Most importantly, would white actually be an appropriate colour choice? What about the bowtie? Red, or matching the tartan?

Hey there cousin! Fancy meeting you here.

I would go with the Navy blue. For a bowtie, stick with black.

I would not wear a white PC. Even white tuxedo jackets can be inappropriate outside of the correct context (unless worn in a warm climate, one runs the risk of being confused with a waiter).

Unlike white/off white dinner jackets I don’t believe there’s any sort of historical pedigree for white kilt jackets, with civilian dress at least.

A white doublet, apart from being untraditional, would forever be at the cleaners.

I'd opt for blue. But white highlights????

My blue velvet one has a lighter blue trim which works well.20230702_094459.jpg

Just to be clear, will it be a Prince Charlie or a Regulation Doublet? I'd go navy over white, probably without the white trim personally.

Hey bro! I was hoping you would chime in on this.

Yeah, I have pretty much decided on the Navy blue. Seems to be the general consensus that white would be only for extremely formal settings. But dang, it would look good with an AF tartan as well as the Sinclair modern red..

I’m still stuck on the lining though. Matching blue would seem to be the logical choice. But I’m also thinking black, but would (or should) the lapels be black to match the lining or stay blue? And white piping of course. But, I can dig what figheadair is saying about light blue piping cause there are two shades in the AF tartan. That would work, but to me, there is something about the blue and white that just says USAF..

Of course white! Just to me that combination screams Air Force. That being said, I’d love to see a pic of your whole jacket. That combination does look good!

Regulation doublet. I guess that was a little confusing. But hey, I’m old. I’m allowed to be confused.

Maybe get 2 vests - one in navy to match the doublet, another in white/ivory - as an alternative way to introduce that element.

Generally I've seen black trim whether the doublet is black, dark blue, or dark green.

White trim and it's going to start looking like an army doublet.

    Peter's blue-on-blue looks great too.
