    Zoom pipe band practice

It's the new reality here in California with the state-wide Stay The F**k At Home order, so The Long Beach Pipe Band had its first virtual practice yesterday using Zoom.

I'd never Zoomed before. I was pleasantly surprised how smoothly it all went.

(Yes I have a red polypenco McCallum practice chanter!)

Any other Pipe Band people out there Zooming?

I was new to Zoom when I was told we would start teaching classes on the platform a couple of weeks ago. I agree that it works quite intuitively. However, here in China, we often have bandwidth and connectivity issues, with there being a delay sometimes between different class members speaking and being heard. So I am impressed that your group could make it work for rehearsing music in a band. Good on you!

    Thanks!

I had almost zero delay on my laptop.

A couple people were experiencing some delay on their laptop/desktop so they used their phone instead. They said the phone is more reliably instantaneous.

Not bad actually, "pads and chanters" as we say, so rather quiet. Only the midsection was on real instruments.

Reminds me of the story of the famous Grade One band in Scotland that was gathering on a green for their Sunday practice.

An old gent saw all the pipers and drummers arriving and taking their instruments out of their cases and asked

    "Another quiet Sunday, is it?"

The band's next album was titled Another Quiet Sunday.

My band is also doing Zoom practice sessions here in New York. I will take a screen shot for you at our next one, and you can feel a little less self conscious when you see that I use a blue polypenco McCallum practice chanter!
