What do you think of this Sgian Dubh
Hi all, I saw a sgian dubh that I think is kind of neat as a daywear item.
It is supposedly a recreation of an officer's sgian dubh from the Crimean & Boer wars. I guess I'm a bit of a gadget person because I like that it has a screw driver, cork screw and bottle opener built into the handle.
It also comes in your choice of clan badges on the front.
What do you guys think? It'll cost about $80 before S&H.

I think it's great. For $80, it ought to be.

Swiss Army knife, uh, I mean, Scots Army Knife version of a sgian dubh. That seems useful!
Also seems like a good price. Did you find it on eBay or is it from a website?

I've seen this one too, and been thinking about it. If I carried a sgian dubh on a daily basis, I would. However, since I always have a Swiss Army knife in my pocket and a Gerber on my belt, I only have a sgian dubh when I'm "Dressed".

documentation...
I've been trying to find actual documentation on this particular sgain dubh actually being issued to the Highland Regiments, but I haven't stumbled on anything so far.
If it is based on the Swiss Army Knife, it certainly wouldn't have been around in the Crimea, since that war was in 1854, and the Swiss Army Knife wasn't issued to the Swiss Army until the early 1890's as a multi-tool for the soldier's rifles.
Cheers,
Todd

There's something rather comforting about the thought that maybe the Swiss actually stole the idea from the Scots!
But that's why I said supposedly because I can't verify that claim either.
