Traditional Garter ties
Simple question. How do you tie garter ties? I watched some how to videos, and I still am having trouble getting it right. One said to use a reef knot and the length was ok but the knots themselves were too large. I watched a video by former member Matt Newsome but he says to wrap them around your leg twice before tieing. My legs are too large to do that. I wrapped them around once, but then they were much too long. Is there a garter ties for dummies I could read or watch?

I don't tie mine. I just wrap one end over and underneath the other (just one half of a knot), and they stay tight by friction. They're not too bulky, either.

I use a square knot, it is a bit bulky, but once the hose is folded over it, it isn't as noticeable.
I have a large legs too, but am able to get them around twice and leave tails if I stretch them just a bit while wrapping around the leg.
Since they are knitted they don't cut off circulation.

I hadn’t really given all that much thought to the way I tie my garter ties, other than to try to get them the right length. I’m at a Highland games this weekend, so while I was getting dressed this morning, I snapped a photo of the knot and the finished look:

My method is equivalent to a clove hitch around the leg. The double loop in the video is a Scout's shortcut for a clove hitch!

Loop twice & tuck the end under from the bottom...

I wrap them around once, bring the loose ends back to the outside of my leg, tie them like the first step in tying shoes, then stuff them through down through the loop around the leg. They hold well and look nice.
If you need to adjust the length, you can always tie higher or lower along the leg, since the turn-down of your sock cuff will hide everything but the tails anyway.
I generally prefer the garter ties over flashes, except for relatively thin hose, such as I sometimes wear in summer weather.
