Marriage? Och!
So, my girlfriend and I are going to start pre-engagement counseling fairly soon... sort of as a formality, plus we'd like to hash out a few things before I pop the question, but yeah, it appears that the Toad may find himself married by next summer.
All this to say, when we get married, we'll unfortunately be on a tight budget, which means purchasing a complete Prince Charlie outfit, or even renting, may be out of the question. So, I'm open to suggestions. Creative ways to kilt up the groomsmen and myself without spending TOO much money. And it doesn't have to be Prince Charlie's, either. A unique look, so long as it was not ridiculously casual, would be awesome. Basically, I'm just looking for favorite looks that ya'll might have. Pics are a plus.
(Yah, you're all saying "Why are you planning this stuff now? You're not even engaged yet!" I like to think ahead. Besides, it's fun to speculate on.)

Congrats and good luck with the engagement.

I suggest you check the dressie kilts section in the pics thread. There are some really nice looks without being too dressie. A nice shirt and tie with a good kilt can look very sharp. Plus if you are marrying in the summer it will be more comfortable.

Do not rent!
I had, about two years ago this month, two weddings in two days. The "nice wedding" was my cousin's and had the worst rental tuxes in the whole world they looked awful at any range closer than 150 feet. Beyond that we could have been zoo escapees. Total cost was about $600 bucks to outfit the groom & men.
The next wedding was my own, I threw togather a cheap kilt $100 and had a black jacket tailored and modified in to a kilt jacket/tux like object $60. Total cost under $200 and looked great. No Grooms men, zero cost.

Congratulations in advance I hope it works out for you. Take a look at this thread by Yaish on his wedding:

Never understood the use of mariage, myself, but if it's your thing, then congratudolences.
It's easy enough to find a tail coat at most second hand stores, and you can probably get it altered to a kilt jacket reasonably inexpensively.

Make it an outdoor, summer wedding. Eliminates the need for jackets.
- Wing collar (aka tuxedo) shirt: $15-$20
- Necktie (or even bowtie): $10
- Vest: $10
Assuming everyone has their own kilts/pants, socks, and dress shoes... you can outfit each groomsman for $50 each.
When my old man got married (for the third time) we all wore our own black slacks, socks, and dress shoes, and he bought us all matching dress shirts and ties. Rather budget conscious.

Casper has a good idea to forego the jackets. Everyone in a simple white shirt and matching tie (perhaps matching tartan - I use http://www.beautiesltd.com/ for occasional ties but there are others). You could use thrifty kilts for the guys, most folks will not know the difference and the price is right for everyone to cover their own costs there. An inexpensive sporran, hose, and flashes and you will have a smashing, budget-friendly affair.

Don't the groomsmen pay for their own rental/purchase? You could also get a pattern and make your own jacket etc. in that time frame.

IF you want an inexpensive "formal-ish" wedding in kilts . . .
I might suggest getting a BUNCH of fabric and making belted plaids for the groom and groomsmen (in all the same tartan).
For jackets, I'd hit the thrift stores and look for black jackets to fit each of the guys and cut off them (the JACKETS! ) at the waist, like:
The result will look something like:
(only, better looking)
