What kilt?

OK here goes, I am looking to buy my very first kilt and I have no idea which manufacturer to buy from. I just started my own HVAC (heating, ventillation, and air conditioning) business so I don't have a very large surplus of cash. I don't want to buy a cheesy (skirtlike) kilt, but I also can't afford to get a $500 kilt.

Any suggestions on an affordable but nice looking kilt would be greatly appreciated.

I see that your new here an welcome to a great group.

I would suggest reading as many of the posts here you can before committing to a certain tartan or manufactor.
I have only been here a few weeks an it did'nt take long to learn what I was looking for an where was the best place to buy it.

Keep in mind though that not everyones tastes are the same an only you can make the decision as to what you like.

This forum is good source for information on different kilts and manufactures. When I started to look for a kilt I was surprised and somewhat overwhelmed by the number of kilt shops in the USA and UK. I reviewed a number of posts on this site to narrow down the selection. Once you make a selection I am sure it will not be your last kilt. Eventually you may end up getting the kilts that were #2 and #3 on your initial selection list. Good luck on your selection.

For a working man check out Utilikilts Workman's as mentioned, Freedom Kilts, and RKilts.

You also might want to PM Graham down in Tasmania, he's a sign guy and is probably up ladders as much as HVAC guys are. He's some solid field experience with working kilts.

The Least expensive in a Tartan Kilt is Stillwater, and also Frugal Corner. I have a tight budget (Vow of Poverty) so can go tossing away hundreds on an article of clothing, God would box my ears. Lol.
I have several of their kilts, plus Amerikilt & Utilikilt (they are not tartan) Kiltstore and Heritage of Scotland are a little more in price, but is best to buy on Ebay as it seems to avoid high shipping etc.

Please tell us what kind of kilt (tartan or solid color) you are looking for and how you intend to wear it (casual or formal).

I would like to get a tartan kilt (US Navy) to wear for casual and then eventually get one (Fraser) for more formal wear (dinner, taking the family out, etc.).

I don't think I will wear a kilt for my work any time soon (frostbitten fingers from a broken refrigerant line is one thing, but other appendages would be much worse).
