Matters of style
Hmm -- I'm not quite sure how to ask this. I need some advise from the brotherhood. I'd imagine that you couldn't tell from my typing , that I am a bit, shall we say, chubby. Now, I'm not happy about that fact, and am doing something about it, and my kilt was also a bit a reward for the job done so far. (It may need altered somewhat within a year - I hope.).
So, my question is, how can I best wear it so that I - um -- er -- ouch -- -- don't look like a fat guy in a skirt -- whew! it hurt to say that.
As I said in other places, I want to look really super for my wife, who encourages me in everything I do. Advise please, my friends.

The kilt is a surprisingly slimming garment. I'd say wear a dark color shirt and make sure not to wear your kilt too high up your natural waist and you'll look thinner than you'd look in pants.

Another way to weight the top to make the rest of you body look slimmer is to wear a sport coat/argyll jacket with or without waistcoat over the upper part of your kilt. Your shoulders will then look wider than the rest of you putting you into a better proportioned look.

As good as the above advice is, my advice to you is be confident. When kilted be conscious of your posture, stand tall and proud. It takes a special man to don the kilt and that will show through. I offer this photo for you to judge whether or not it looks like a fat guy in a skirt or a is it a man who knows how good he looks. (I don't mean to be stroking my own ego, it's just that I like this pic.)

One thing I notice is if the sporran strap is under your belly it can accentuate it, if you bring it up a bit so it does not go underneath it helps.

I advise all my customers who are "Gentlemen of Substance" to get their Kilt made with a Full Rise.
This means that the top straps of the Kilt are at your natural waist. Or just below the ribs.
When worn this way the front apron of the Kilt drops straight down and almost totally camouflages the stomach.
Then insure the sporran is sitting just on the stomach and not hanging underneath. This way it will hang free in front and not bunch up the aprons.
Please see the photo of Big Mikey above.

Seconded! I weigh in at just under 290. I think Big Mikey's advice is dead on. And good luck on your goals! I was just over 430 three years ago, and still going down. My legs are now nothing but solid muscle...

One suggestion I would make is to look into using waistcoats instead of a belt with a fancy waist plate.
There is a tendency I have noticed where the belt can slip under the belly of a gentleman of substance and look awkward.
Waistcoats on the other hand look slimming and dapper

You can avoid this problem by wearing sporran hangers instead of a sporran strap. And definitely wear a kilt at or above the navel (a full-rise kilt will do this for sure. This tends to disguise the paunch. Whereas a kilt worn at normal pants height emphasizes the paunch). Properly worn, the kilt can have a slimming effect.
