Kilt talk to primary school kids

Am off to talk to some primary school (primary 5 so around 9 years old) children next week about kilts and kilt making. Thought it was just me taking some partly made kilts along to show and maybe answer some questions, but turns out I should do a wee talk too. any suggestions on what 9 year olds would find interesting about kilts and kilt making?

Well, I would only suggest that you have a kid-friendly answer to "the question", in case one of them knows about such things and decides to ask. Kids say the darndest things sometimes, ya know?

That was my first thought, too. Kids also like things about soldiers, so I would say that giving information about the military lineage of the kilt would help to hold interest.

Perhaps a small discussion and few images showing the evolution of the kilt from great kilt to modern day "8yd-knife-pleat"

    All good ideas

Thanks for those. Stupidly hadn't thought of doing a wee power point. Guess I was thinking that when I was at school, it was overhead projector with acetate sheets or nothing.

I think this is a brilliant idea!! The only problem I foresee is that ALL the kids will want to try it.

Ask how many feet is 8 yards.
Ask how long 8 yards is, and then tell them how many yards long the room you're in is (or point to something 8 yards away). That usually impresses them.

I always talk about my outfit when I do piping demonstrations for kids, and just talking about what it is and what the various accessories are usually takes five to 10 minutes.

That's true - the time will probably go faster than I think. I did wonder about taking in an 8 yd piece of one I'm about to mark out, but it's Dark Island that I'm about to do, so it's not the most vibrant of tartans to look at! But I guess it would make the point.

I wonder if the youngsters will understand when you talk in feet and yards, now that the Scottish schools teach the kids in metric measurements.
