kilt at work
not sure where this should go so mods move as you see fit.
i need some opinions on the matter... i wore my kilt to school yesterday and all went very well (i even got hit on by an older woman) after school i went to my work to pick up my first paycheck, i walked in and one of the girls started laughing "no big deal" i thought and asked for my check and when i work next there were three employees at the store so my friend jared says i think its cool meanwhile sarah who is 17 by the way is going on and on in front of customers about how i look stupid in a dress so i says "well thats your opinion and right now it has zero value with me at all so you can take that as it is" well at that point she starts calling big sarah who is in the back finding my check to "come see the dress greg is wearing" im getting pissed at this point but keeping my cool, big sarah walks out and say "OH a kilt... looks great" SCORE!!!!!
i guess what my point is is should i persue harassment charges and have her fired or just let it go and see what happens?.
i know some of you are gonna say grow a pair and if i didnt want the attention then i shouldnt be wearing a kilt... thats not the point of this post
my point is it wasent just simple banter or a crack at me... it was an attack and i think what pissed me off the most was is was in front of customers and not professional at all.

Honestly it would be more of a hassle than anything that could possibly be gained. Your co-worker suffers from HUTA (head up the ****) and there's no amount of anything you can do to change that. Education is a wonderful thing but far too often in this world is also a wasted thing.
Just my two cents worth.

Only you can decide, the guys at my work like to make a joke about the fact I wear my kilts when I'm off (not allowed to when working) but with us it's just banter.
There will always be some people that think your weird for wearing a kilt so try not to be too sensitive on the other hand it was in from of the public and had you been a customer then she would be sacked.
I guess you have to decide if you want to make a big deal of it or not.

P.S. There was a thread a while back about a guy who worked in a bookstore who got sent home and possibly threatened whith the sack for wearing a kilt you might want to look for it.

When I first wore my kilt to work I got a few snickers, some snide remarks (such as "wearing a dress" comments), and just plain rude staring. The second time I got much fewer of these, and the third time no one said anything negative - in fact, just the reverse. At that point, people began asking me to wear the kilt, especially when I hadn't worn it for a couple of weeks.
Ignore little Sarah. Her type will always be around. If you wear a kilt more often she'll soon get the idea that her rudeness has no impact on you.

i talked to my boss this morning and he basically she will get a verbal warning then if it happens again it will be written... third time she's gone.
i fully expect be have banter among coworkers its a given but to keep going on and on like that is very unprofessional granted i work in the food industry so it is what it is BUT in front of customers was my biggest deal.
the thing that i have to remember is im used to working in a very professional setting so when you go from working on multi million dollar jets to making food you tend to hate your life lol

I would say, at this point, don't pursue harrassment charges. Sit down with her, explain to her what it is you were wearing, why you were wearing it, what it means, the cultural value and history behind it, and explain to her how incredibly offensive it is to demean you in that way. She is calling you a cross dresser, and then making a point to dehumanize you for it- it's akin to calling a black person a ****** or a gay man a ******! No civilized human being does it- once given the correct information. After you have had the culture and history part of this civilized conversation, you should tell her that you will show her basic respect and courtesy, and that you expect the same from her. From this point on, if the harassment continues, then yes- take further action with management.
