Hello, from (currently snow packed) Wichita, Kansas!
Although I am not new to the Kilt, daily wear of the Kilt is new to me. I am excited and gratified to find this forum!
I have a wife of 18 years and we have three children. My wife loves the Kilts – we both come from a rich Scottish heritage – and made the one I now have. Our children think it is a little strange that dad likes to wear his Kilt, but that is just dad.
I want to find an affordable daily wear contemporary Kilt that supports a clean, sharp, confident and competent image without being overbearing. I am a conservative dresser who likes to look sharp at the office without a large investment in maintenance. I currently wear slacks and a button down shirt for most of my daily wear – at the office and around town – but want to make the move to Kilts. The only Kilt I have is more of a costume, rather light, and doesn’t hold creases well so I am not comfortable wearing it in public for anything other than a costume.
While I do not mind stirring things up a bit, I try to make others around me comfortable and make every attempt at discretion and decorum that I can. As a Christian (I am Mormon), I believe that when there is a doubt or question about a rule – written or not – that it is better to get permission than seek forgiveness. To that end, I asked if the dress code at work would permit me to wear the Kilt.
The answer came back as a (tentative) “No” because it does not fit in with their image of “professional attire.” Strange, I see all kinds of questionable t-shirts but the Kilt is un-professional? Anyway, I have stated that I will abide by the decision the company makes. I have also requested the opportunity to state my case fully and in person, expressing that rather than fight or argue I simply desire the opportunity to present my request in the best light.
Having said all that, what advice can anyone provide a newbie?
Thanks
