    First Kilt

Hello all. I've been lurking for a while, and am wanting to get my first kilt.
There's a kilt night this coming Friday here in Indianapolis and I'm looking at Stillwater Kilts since I hear I can get them in 37 minutes

I was wanting to order one of their wool kilts but the selection of tartans is really limited. My wife doesn't particularlly like Black Watch. I like the Ancient Hunting MacRae but it's not available in wool, only in the Standard, but it's acrylic. I'm also not too sure about wearing a tartan I don't "qualify" for.

Stillwater also doesn't seem to have the belt size in stock I wanted (embossed black in Large)

I guess there's no answer to my dilema, unless someone has a Montgomery or Gibson in about 41 or 42 inch for sale!

Is there another company who offers scairy-fast service for good prices like Stillwater?

Sorry for the ramble. I've been mulling this over for a really long time and feel ready to make the jump to a kilt, and waiting for weeks for the first one just won't do!

I can only offer first hand experience on 2 options:

    Sportkilt and
    The Frugal Corner-Kilt Store

If it is on-hand, they respond quick.

    Good Luck.

Annnnnd? Wear what you want!! I'm no where near Scot or Irish...but i wear a MacLaren Modern Sport kilt...because I can and have the stones to do so. It takes thick skin and brass ones to wear one anyway so do what you want....
    just my 2 cents.

You can wear NEARLY any tartan you wish. It would be nice if you learned a wee tad about its history(if it has one) though.

Take the time and order what you really want. Don't worry about delivery time. Anticipation is part of the pleasure.....

I have to agree. There will be more kilt nights, you will be much happier if you find the tartan you want and then get a kilt.

If speed is your ultimate priority, be aware that options are usually very limited. Different suppliers will have different "ready to ship" kilts in different tartans as well...

Problem with this is that Sport Kilts are so much closer to skirts than actual kilts that getting a Sport Kilt may turn our new gentleman off to kilts in general. Just my thoughts- and the thoughts of my wife. Sport kilts do make fantastic women's clothing, but the men's leave a lot to be desired in my opinion. I plan to send mine to USA Kilts for their Cash For Clunker Kilts program...

As to Frugal Corner, their kilts are acrylic like the Stillwater standards. If you're cool with that, then go for it! On the Stillwater side, the shadow tartans are sweet!! I have a saffron and really want a black one. I say get one of those, man!! Oh, and the woolies aren't nearly as flamable as the acrylics... I know this from experience.

Another option is USA Kilts. They have quite a few off the rack casual kilts, and USAK are a fantastic company. I have 3 of their kilts and will soon be getting a 4th with any luck. AND they're scary fast!

    And one last thing-

Thanks everyone for your helpful advice.
I ordered a Sporran, sporran belt and kilt pin from Stillwater and a kilt in Modern Montgomery, flashes, belt and buckle from Frugal-Corner.
I plan to see how I like wearing the kilt before I invest in a custom wool kilt.

I'd like to try making an x-kilt but am having trouble finding the plans for it.
It's probably right under my nose but perhaps someone can provide the link?
    Thanks again!

I agree wholeheartedly with that Nighthawk. I've seen and handled a sport Kilt although I haven't actually worn one... The one I saw was tartan coloured at least but it felt like it was made of winsiette (pyjama cotton). I know a lot of the membership like them but they are not my favourite.
