    Gaelic love song? I need a good'n!

My wife to be told me we should pick a song to play for eachother, and apparently she has hers picked out. So...

I need to pick a song from me to her and since we are having a "gael theme" I was wondering if any of you all know some good ones about a girl? I like bands like the dubliners, planxty, gaelic storm, etc. I just need some ideas!

    Rabble, don't fail me now!!!!

    Thanks in advance! Haha

Hmm, I thought all Gaelic love songs involve someone dying...

"She Was the Prize" by Gaelic Storm isn't a bad place to start (especially since you mentioned them as a favorite).

carlb, that one works only if she's got "shiny black hair and those lovely brown eyes". If his b-t-b is blonde and blue, Zach could get in a lotta trouble!

I just scanned through my collection. Unfortunately, Dale is right. Most of the 'love songs' seem to deal with unrequited love, or a tragic loss of a love.

Not sure if you mean literally gaelic language or gaelic in origin. The Chieftains recorded many such Irish songs but mainly the tunes and rarely and rarely if ever the words to go with. One of my favorites is "An Paisteen Fionne" (my fairheaded {or lovely} girl). I'm afraid I know only English words for it. Robert Burns wrote many love songs but in Scots dialect, not gaelic. A non-Burns song that I'm told melts the hardest heart would be this one; I don't even know the original composer but you can Google it:

Summertime is coming, and the trees are sweetly bloomed
And the wild mountain thyme blows among the blooming heather-
    Will ye go, Lassie, go?

I have to say that true Gaelic lyric songs seem to be quite rare, to the extent that certain very popular Scots-Canadian songs use nonsense Gaelic-sounding syllables....

Yeah, as far as dying is concerned, one of my favorite modern Scottish songs is "Love You Till the End" by the Pogues.

Here's a few that I found in my songbook, both Scottish and Irish:

"My Mary of the Curling Hair" by Gerald Griffin
"My Love Is Like a Red, Red Rose" by Robbie Burns
"None Can Love Like an Irishman" an Irish Folksong
"Peg O' My Heart" by Fred Fischer and Alfred Bryan
"The Pretty Girl Milking Her Cow" by Thomas Moore
"Lochbroom Love Song" a Folksong from the Hebrides

I've got a couple of favorites I'd suggest, provided you don't mean in the Gaelic language.

The Braes o' Balquhidder (I like the Tannahill Weavers' version, but this one is nice too)
    Lyrics

    The Queen of All Argyll

"MacDonald the piper stood up in the pulpit,
He made the pipes skirl out the music divine."

I just posted that Ishbel Macaskill passed away on March 31st. Get one of her recordings. They are beautiful and have some wonderful, soul stirring Gaelic love songs in them.

Just because you are paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you.

Taste is such a personal thing, there's no way to know what would be right for you and for this situation. However, if all else fails, perhaps an instrumental (no words) like Highland Catherdral and say "Because there's never been a song written that can say how I feel for you." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tEdH...eature=related

    It's a thought.

Just listened to a song of hers... wOw! What a voice, making the loss all the greater.

And that reminded me of Julie Fowlis. Another great voice keeping old songs in old languages alive. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ez1O5...eature=related
