Collegiate tartans - my old school
The University of South Carolina has announced that they have registered a tartan with the STA, though I can't seem to find it. Perhaps that is because U.S.C. frequently uses "Cocky" the gamecock as their mascot and the tartan may be known as "old cocky". The dirty mind of my workplace internet protocol prohibits searches that refer to roosters, etc.
It would seem that a company, COLLEGIATE TARTAN.COM, is in the business of ginning up support for college tartans and merchandising items with bits of the tartan sewn on. What I can't figure out is whether or not they are restricting these tartans- that is, do they assert exclusive rights to them? Has anyone had any experience with Collegiate tartans, either the concept or the company? Anybody had a run of college tartan fabric woven?
Thanks

Yes. This tartan may not be woven or produced in any form without written permission from: Trademark and Licensing Contract Compliance Manager University of South Carolina 1600 Hampton Street Suite 606 Columbia, SC 29208 803-777-7313 803-777-2032 Fax
Only to be produced under licence. |
Registration notes: |
Garnet and black are the official colours of the University of South Carolina (USC). They were first used by the football team in a game against Furman University on Christmas Eve 1892. In 2010, Marianne Bickle, PhD, Director at the USC Centre for Retailing, started the process of establishing USC’s own tartan incorporating the school’s colours. The students, faculty, staff and alumni chose the final design from a pool of three finalists during the spring semester of 2013. An important element of the tartan’s production is its philanthropic nature, as a portion of the proceeds from sales of the tartan will be used to fund student scholarships. |

Thanks.
I was victim to another of my many failings- not knowing the difference between the SRT and the STA. At least the university itself seems to be licensing, not the present merchandiser, so there may be hope of some kilts, or at least tartan cheerleader uniforms in the future.

I have no experience with the company, but the "study abroad" program that had me in Scotland in 1998 has a registered tartan. http://www.tartanregister.gov.uk/tar....aspx?ref=4766
I do like the "ancient" colors version of it that Dalgleish has... http://www.dcdalgliesh.co.uk/fabric/...0in%20Scotland When I was studying there in '98, Dalgleish was doing small amounts in narrow strips for purchasing/wearing as scarves (and only in modern color). Had they been doing the ancient in kilt width... I may have purchased some then.
If ever I am abundant in money, it would be fun to have a kilt made in this tartan. First, I would like to get another tank, preferably in a proper clan tartan (Campbell) or Black Watch.
