Does Everyone Know About Kilts?
I wear my kilt every chance I get because they are so damn comfortable and fit better than any pants I've ever owned. If I could I would only wear kilts. But... When I went to walmart I wore my kilt and of course the women love it but some guys were laughing like they didn't know what it was. This question may sound stupid but doesn't everyone know what a kilt is? I figured everybody knows what a kilt is because who in this world hasn't at least seen Braveheart or gone to a St. Patrick's Day parade? Is it possible that people out there might not know what it is?

I'd say that here in the states, as a rule, the general public knows what a kilt is. I've had people of all ages and sexes, little boys to old grannies, and from hillbillies to hipsters to suits to soccer moms, comment on my kilts and know exactly what I was wearing. Even the developmentally disabled guy at the local Goodwill drop off knew the camouflage skirt I was wearing was a kilt.
The dudes at Walmart weren't laughing because they didn't know what you were wearing, they were laughing because they're insecure dicks with small, sad little lives. Haters gonna hate, that's just the way it is. Always remember that for every bro that laughs, there's a dozen women wishing their guy could be as awesome as you.

Ratspike nailed it nicely. There are about 7 billions people on the earth. You bound to run into a couple of jerks. I wouldn't be concerned about it if I were you.

In the UK, I would think 99% have seen a kilt on TV, though probably less than 30% have seen one in real life, the Edinburgh Tattoo is shown on National TV every year (it was Aug 31st this year). As for Braveheart, I like my history and hate the destruction of it, so I've never seen it. Outside of the US, the Kilt is not generally associated with the Irish, few would recognize a saffron kilt. There are few St Patrick's day parades in the UK, only as far As I can find, in London, Birmingham and Manchester, they are not normally mentioned on national TV.
The only time I've seen St Patrick's day mentioned on TV in England, are to do with the fact the magistrates have allowed special opening hours for Pubs on that day But Not for St Georges Day!!
If should be noted that even if you wore a kilt in Scotland, in a non formal occasion, remarks may well be made.

Oh, they were just being jerks then. I never pay any mind to jerks, they aren't worth the powder to blow em up and most of the time it's more satisfying to walk away with their girlfriends while they watch than it is to beat them up.
It's good to know that everyone knows what a kilt is though, I wouldn't want anyone to think I was wearing a skirt.

You were in Walmart. Surely you didn't expect to see a MENSA gathering.

You get more variety in kids reactions. At the weekend I got a warm welcome from one whose knowledge of kilts was based on having seem one on a Tom and Jerry cartoon, which we then had to watch most of the way through till it appeared (and equally quickly disappeared in a gust of wind!)
Then there was the little girl I came across on a walk who turned and ran straight back to her mum "Mummy, Mummy there is a man in a skirt!" Then, of course, there are the cheeky ones with the oh so unoriginal comments/questions who you just have to ignore. Any response generally goes over or straight through their heads, if they are even listening.
If you are going to do it, do it in a kilt!

The more you wear a kilt the less self-conscious you will act and any guff will pretty much disappear. Went totally to kilt wear every day over 5 years ago and I don't recall hearing anything but positive response after the first few months. I think it became a non "thing" to me and I projected that in my actions and bearing. I have gotten questions and had to pause to figure out that they were referring to my kilt or sporran. Not looking "hunted" but confident fends off those wise guys with a mouth.

Pants is only a present tense verb here. I once panted, but it's all cool now.

I too have worn a kilt into a Walmart & the worst thing that happened was some giggling teen girls trying to sneak a pic of me . I did have a couple of people start to laugh once until I looked over at them . They were wearing their pajamas , outside , at noon ... I don't give a crap what anyone thinks I know that when I wear my kilt I'm the best dressed guy in town & any guys laughing only wish their ladies looked at them the way they look at me .
