Well met new friend. You will get advice to review the threads on contemporary wear. But let's start small and concentrate on the upcoming season and weather you'll live in. You must think of needs then adapt a style you like. Get the things you need first before accessories.
Socks (hose)
footwear
shirt choices
vests to jackets
Once you have the things listed, consider the social settings you plan to attend. You can get as plain and splashy as you want with color, price and quantity. All this happens before you get the next kilt, and so on, and so on...
Some can say NO to the kilt addiction, others of us blindly window shop and some are within the clutches of the pleated pleasure. Welcome.

Glad you're here and looking for perspective. Take a look at this thread prepared by two of our knowledgeable and experienced members to help out with your vision: http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/f...-attire-46888/
Some things to remember:
- A Sghian need not be an early purchase. Nobody notices if you don't have one. Later, you can buy a plain one if you wish. Same with a kilt pin.
- One pair of complimentary self-coloured hose (not usually white or black) is enough to start. Two pair of different colours is a delightful luxury.
- Don't buy gillie shoes, at least to get started. They're largely an affectation. Good quality normal dress shoes will take you a long way. (Pun intended.)
- You do need the best quality, fairly plain day sporran you can afford. Suggestions available if you want them. Don't skimp here; it's the first thing people see after the kilt itself.
- Plain or lightly checked shirts go a long way.
- A normal Saxon sports jacket is not a kilt jacket. Save up and buy something flexible when you can. Again, that thread and online discussions here will help you to select. Suggestions available if you want them.
- You don't need a kilt belt, and if you do get one, you don't wear it with a vest.
- Vests don't need to match the jacket so long as they all tone in well together, and Saxon vests fit pretty well the same as kilt vests, so if you have something in your closet already, then save a nickel.
- A kilt looks good in casual use with a sweater that may already be in your closet - sleeveless is fine. If you wear a sweater, you don't need a belt or vest. Money saved!
If you stick to these basics, you can save on your initial investment, select wisely, and build your kit economically, flexibly, and wisely. As you approach each step... ask! We're all here to help out.
This is one of my casual get ups with a lot more gear than I really need. (Sghian, upgrade hose, kilt pin, dirk belt.)
Cheers & Blessings,

Welcome from Illinois!
I'm a fan of solid color polo shirts and sweaters, a dress shirt and vest look smart just remember a vest with an adjusting strap on the back or sides is meant to be worn under a jacket and not on its own

You're clearly making a very thoughtful start to the process, and getting back a lot more good advice than I can offer!
Happy kilting.

When you get enough of your total outfit together, post in the "Show us your Pics" forum. Several members make our own "stuff" also. We're always curious to see new things.
