Looking for opinions on tweed colors.
I'm looking to have a tweed jacket and vest/waistcoat made and I am having trouble deciding which tweed to go with. I know that all tweeds have more or less the same degree of formality, and I'm not particularly worried about matching tweed to tartan, but I would like some guidance. The way I see it most tweeds go with most tartans so it's just about picking one I like best and will enjoy wearing the most. The colors I like the most are what the seller is calling lomond blue, lovat blue, and maybe forest green. I am also open to the ever-popular lovat green. The lomond blue may be my favorite but I worry that it looks too like charcoal. To me, one of the great things about tweed is that it allows you to escape the navys and greys of Saxon menswear. Below are examples of the lomond and lovat blue tweeds as worn by some of the Rabble as well as pictured(I hope) of the swatches I'm considering with my tartan. Also, and I know it's just a matter of personal preference, but which tartan do you personally prefer, the Urquhart Ancient or Modern? I'm hoping to have a Barbara Tewksbury kilt made up this year.

How about a tweed with a subtle overcheck to add a little more interest? Here’s a Marton Mills tweed from the USA Kilts site:

I find lovat green very hard to beat. Glen does a wonderful job with his Lovat Blue, of course.
If I were to start my highland wardrobe over, and were a wealthier man, I would order one jacket in lovat green and one in a light brown, both with overchecks. Matching waistcoats, too. I might also add one of those multichecks like Richard has recently had made up. All would be modern jacket cuts - no epaulettes nor gauntlet cuffs.

I'd prob. go with the ancient tartan and lovat blue - although I do like a nice windowpane overcheck.
That's the joy of tweeds is there is everything from sober & conservative to subtle & understated to loud & proud - Lovat Mill have some great options in their Kirkton range.

One thing to perhaps keep in mind that when coordinating two colours (in this case jacket and kilt) an important aspect is the overall lightness or darkness (tone) of each.
It's generally better to get the jacket and the kilt not of the same hue and tone. Ideal is if there's a contrast in both, but at the very least there should be a contrast in one.
For that reason I prefer either the middle or righthand tweed in the 2nd photo.
Especially the "Modern" tartan, but even the "Ancient" tartan, are dark enough for me to want to avoid going with a middle-dark tweed, where the kilt and the jacket won't be differentiated enough IMHO.
And example of having a contrast in tone is, in the 1st photo, selecting the lighter blue for the Modern tartan and the darker blue for the Ancient tartan, which is what I would do if I went with blue.
Personally I would consider browns as well- the best way to coordinate with a tartan is to not use one of the tartan's main ground-colours in the jacket, and my knee-jerk reaction would be to avoid blue or green thus go to brown.

Are you having the kilt pleated to a particular strip or strips? If so, I would ether choose a jacket colour to match that strip(s) and then get accessories (like tie and flashes) to match the one of the ground colours associated with that strip(s) or you can do vice versa(jacket to ground colour and accessories to strip(s) colour)

A nice brown tweed would be smashing with either of those tartans.

Thank you OCR for putting into words what has been bothering me for a long time. I have a kilt in Ancient Campbell, Strome, which is a sort of neutral tone. I have a Lovat Green jacket which I like, but not with that kilt. I got it for an older kilt in modern colors and it was great. The older kilt I got when I was a teenager. It has moth holes and doesn't fit  . The newer one (1986 is newer) I still wear, but just don't like it with the Lovat Green jacket. Now I know why.

I would like a kilt in the Urquhart weathered but as this will be my only wool kilt for a while I prefer either the modern or ancient.
