    Camo Kilt Pockets

I like a traditional or almost height kilt. I also like pockets and wanted to keep the clean lines. So......I had already put in the deep seven inch under apron pleats and was looking at them last night. I found I could make them into pockets with little trouble at all. Took out one seam. Sewed the bottom of the pocket, sewed down and bar tacked below belt and then 5 inches below that to below the pocket and bar tacked both sides of that line.

Here is a picture of the inside of the kilt (deep pleat only) that has been sewn over 3x for security up to a couple mm before the pleat face. The pocket depth is 11" from the top. And has a 5" opening for hand (5.5 for anyone with bigger hands. Meant for stashing keys, change, or some cash and ID. I wore it to McD's with the little girl and wished I had somewhere for change. This is what I came up with. You can see the one seam I had to take out to do this.

On the outside you can see the detail. The pleat sewn down to just below the level of the belt loops 3", The pocket opening that is just the usual fell line sewn down, only in this case I only sewed the face of the pleat to create an opening. Then sewn down another 4" and bar tacked throught all 3 layers. I think it helps the kilt lie better and is a little more functional. Took about 30 minutes of head scratching for both pockets. If planned during the initial sewing it could be done in less than a couple minutes.

    Just Another pocket shot

    Hand fits

Wow! a wallet magically appears from a kilt.

I'd be glad to send Alan some details to include in the X Kilt if people want inside pockets. Even though this is not an X kilt (It's just my usual with box pleats) the deep under apron pleats could be done with no problem. O'Neille

    Thumbs up

I'll have to consider pockets on my next kilt now. Thanks for posting the pics.

Pockets are good as long as they don't interfere with anything.
