I Popped the Question (Kilt at Work)
Well, I did it. I popped the kilt question at work today in an email. Today there was a funeral for a co-worker. I came back to the office as things are really strained right now. I went to speak to our IS manager about a customer connection and I went there with the intent of stepping across the hall after speaking with him to meet with our HR manager. I have been trying to speak to our HR manager about wearing a kilt to week for about four weeks. After being struck by lightening three weeks ago and losing a friend and co-worker last weekend I lost the fear to ask. Well, it did not happen. Just as I was finishing meeting with the IS manager I heard the door close across the hall…..RATS, SHE’S LEAVING EARLY! I quickly rapped up and stepped out into the hallway to see the HR manager leave. So now I am thinking that I am tired of putting this off no matter what the out come. It was getting close to 5 and I was about the only one left. I went back to my office and sent an email. Tomorrow I expect to have our HR manager look at me with a very puzzled look. I will keep you posted.

I wish you good luck too. I am thinking of wearing the kilt to work also. I have decided to take another route. Our agency has no formal dress code. Everything from shorts, to jeans, to running pants are worn on a daily basis. As next thursday is William Wallace day, I am going to use it as an occasion to wear the kilt. I am sure it will be a good way to answer the "Why the kilt question." If there is no negative reaction from my boss (the HR director), then I will start wearing it more often.

Hard to understand why in this day and age an employer would make a fight over a kilt. After all, if you were fired for coming to work dressed as a woman that would be like an automatic legal action from the ACLU.

It is a fun barometer of the sanity of people to bring it up . . .
One thing I encourage is, whatever the ruling, have them give it to you in writing. Many people are willing to say something to restrict, just to avoid having to deal with any mythical issues that may arise. But do it in writing? Then they tend to think about it a bit more.
Now, I wouldn't recommend being a donkey about it, just straight forward and factual. And bring up diversity, that seems to be the magic word these days . . .

It's funny how people are at work.
I wore a kilt to work for the first time back on Tartan Day. It was a big hit and I got some nice compliments. That was the last time I was kilted at work. But today I got the itch to wear my new American Heritage. My co-workers are seemingly oblivious. A few comments but for the most part, they're ignoring me. I'm guessing the "shock value" has worn off. I'm not quite sure I like that.
