Boating while kilted?
Anyone tried it? We are sailors and I'd love to go kilted in port/ashore. The problem, as I see it, is how to get ashore. We anchor and go about in a dinghy with an outboard. There is an awkward climb down a stern-mounted swim ladder, sitting in an inflatable boat (that will likely be dirty). I am afraid there is much potential for overexposure and possible soiling of the kilt (including submersion in saltwater; the worst-case scenario). And if we pick up the motor launch provided at some marinas....it's gonna be showtime for the passengers already onboard! I guess I can transport the kilt and dress onshore. Other ideas?

I bet a Utilikilt type thing wouldn't care about saltwater
As far as the compromising situations where your dinghy or fishing tackle might get overexposed, I simply wear black undies. I know, I know it's sacrilegious but if I know I'm going to be in a situation where I'll scare someone's wife or daughters (or cause a laugh fest) I'd rather just be a bit discreet. It's plenty easy to take em off later after rock climbing.

Hellya!
Go boating and rafting kilted frequently. Wind is ALWAYS a nemisis but once you're comfy kilted in the wind its no biggie.
When I have to go up a ladder on a boat its nice if my lady is behind me to avoid putting on a show. Course if there were kids aboard I'd wear black jockeys.

This boat was aground, but still near enough to the water to get lots of wind.

Rafting is a form of boating...lots of wind down in the canyon too.
Its doable, have fun, be FREE!!

How I Did It
Baggy shorts on/off the ship with my kilt rolled up and stuffed in a nylon stuff bag. Changed on shore. Today I'd roll, then fold, the kilt and put in it a small backpack or book bag.

I've never gone sailing kilted. You certainly don't want a lot of extremely loose clothing or to have any other dangly bits around fast-moving ropes.
Don't ask about the dangly bits.

Rex.

How did our ancestors in the Hebrides get by? ;-) Perhaps they weren't so modest or squeamish.

Didn't wear kilts, that's how.

I suppose talking about kilted boating is OK as long as you don't mention the flare gun.

I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Don't a lot of the Scots Division have elastic sown into the back of their kilts to keep the pleats looking nice and to help hold them down in the wind? You could always have a particular boating kilt with something like that installed.
