Thank you
I have to thank you all and a couple of kilts sites I have visited. I am a Newbie and haven't worn a kilt since I was 6 years old. I was forced into short pants when I went to School in Ierby, Cumberland.... not far from Carlisle and on the border of Scotland and England.
I joined your community a few days ago and I had already ordered a kilt (Scott) from "Heritage of Scotland". I had also ordered a few other things from them at the same time to the tune of $1200.00 Canadian. I re-read the order and it was all mixed up and wrong. I read some of the comments about this company and started to Panic. I know know they do not sew the kilts in Scotland and they import some cheaper products. They have a fantastic marketing system.
All of there kilts are sewn in Pakistan from a mill in Scotland. The weight of the material is lighter than what they say and they are made with a Poly/Ester with some wool woven into it. Apparently they are comfortable to wear but are not very able to stand up to last very long and could ignite if you cook a crabs on a beach over an open fire. I told them that I would re-submit my order of they could supply me with a 16 oz virgin wool kilt that was made in Scotland. They did tell me that they could not do that! I hate what some countries do to the professional kilt makes in Scotland.
I know they may make some products that look good but they are not made by the craftsmen of Scotland. This trend needs to be stopped.
I must say that they did send me an email saying that they were sorry they were not the company that I had expected and they did cancelle my order. Be Warned that VISA will not cancel your order but will help you if the site you ordered from had "False advertising"
To anyone that wants a kilt... if the deals sound to be to good to be true...then it probably isn't.
I have to give this forum and members a big Thank you. I would also ask if anyone tlldknows a good legitimate company that I could order a kilt from I wou[d be much in there debt.
I/We are going to attend the Highland games May 21 to May 23in Victoria BC. We have attend these games for a few years now and anyone we have ever met are such good people This time I rented a Kilt from the House of MacCleran in Vancouver.
I am so looking forward to this. I will see my sister and go to the games in a KILT.
Now could I ask a question?
Where in Scotland could I get a 100% Virgine kilt crafted in Scotland?
What would me Wee Lass wear when she accompanies me to fit in? Should she could wear? A cape? a shawl.... or what. She is Finish but a Lass of the North country1
Thanks for any info.
It is going to cost me 4190.00 cAN #

First off,
As for the kilt: does it have to be made in Scotland? The banner at the top of the page has some - and certainly not all - of the fine kiltmakers that people on this site use regularly. If you're going to be in B.C. anyway, there is a fine kiltmaker there that you might want to try (click on Freedom Kilts). We also have a very skilled kiltmaker in France, if you'd like to give her a try (www.lady-chrystel-kilts.com). Scotweb is in Scotland and they've had nothing but praise; the Scottish Tartan Museum offers kilts of many styles with an amazing historical understanding... They're all a safe bet if you're looking for quality Scotland-made wool and excellent workmanship.
Now, the challenge is to decide which one!!

When you get to the Victoria Games make sure to come to the tent and introduce yourself.

Greetings.
In this kind of time crunch you might post an advert in the "wanted to buy section" to see if someone might sell you a used kilt. Typical shorthand would be 36-40-24 for instance, my kilt size in inches, 36" waist, 40" hips and 24" overall length.
I don't expect you'll get a made to measure kilt made in Scotland in time for this year.

Good luck with your search, and

Welcome to the forum. Sounds like you need to rent one for the short-term and look for a used one to own. If you have a clan you associate with then check with their society. People, you will see here, often have good quality garments that have mysteriously shrunk or, in rare cases, grown and they want to sell them. Rent what you need now and bide your time. Also save your money while biding your time and you will perhaps end up buying new. Good luck.

Quality has nothing to do with where your kilt is sewn. There have been quite a few threads recently discussing this very topic. Quality is derived from the amount of effort you and your kilt maker put into producing a kilt that is made to your specifications. If you put in a little effort for yourself, you will surely be pleased with the outcome.
Find out what is truly important to you. Read through all the threads in the Member Written Articles forum and all of Matt Newsome's articles. I'm thinking specifically of "Handy Guide to Buying a Kilt." Your first consideration should be tartan choice or if you don't want a tartan kilt at all. You should also consider how the kilt should be pleated, how the tartan should be displayed in the pleats, the weight of your kilt, and the type of fabric to be used.
The best advice I can offer is to not rush into anything. Take your time learning what you consider important in a kilt and deal with one of the many quality kilt makers on this forum. Steve from Freedom Kilts has already chimed in, and he is close to you. This site is an excellent source of knowledge about kilts and highland dress, and I challenge you to find a single post that claims "100% Virgine kilt crafted in Scotland" is superior to all others.
Welcome to the forums and good luck in the future.
Cheers,
-J
