Suggestions on jackets ?
I am interested in suggestions for where to look for a good jacket. I have several tweed sport jackets that I could modify, but am starting to think it would be smarter to just buy one that fits right in the first place. My amatuer forays into kilt making have been only so-so in terms of results, and jackets look tougher to me.
So suggest away. I do not need a Prince Charlie for formal events, but something that would be nice at a semi-formal event.
Thanks

Argyle. They usually come in black, but if you want something that is more for casual wear, go with tweed (I think it looks better than all black anyways).
Crail is nice jacket too, but argyle is more popular.

Not sure your funding capability. I had excellent results ordering a custom jacket through Kathy Lare of Kathys Kilts www.kathyskilts.com in Albuquerque, NM.
The jacket is sewn up in Scotland to MY measurements (which are too weird for off the rack...if the belly's right the sleeves are too long and vice versa).
I sorted out what it is I wanted with her. Sent her the measurements she needed. She had the jacket done up TO FIT ME....I loved it. And I still paid the same as if I'd gotten it off the rack.
Had to wait a few weeks since it was custom...but the jacket will outlive me and it will fit, so was an easy wait.

Semi-formal would be a black Argyll with a white shirt and dark tie.

I'm of the opinion that "semi-formal" has a completely different meaning in the US vs. the UK.
When someone says "semi-formal" in the US, I think a charcoal or black Argyll would quite easily pass muster, while "formal" would call for the Prince Charlie.
I haven't yet figured out just where a Sheriffmuir or Montrose doublet and jabot would fit in anywhere in the US, other than something like a kilt fashion show, or some ceremony at a Highland Games.

Well yeah, now that you mention that, what 'does' formal and semi-formal mean to people anyway ? I have always been confused by that. It sort of seems to me that it would be black, and not black, at some level around here with "conventional" dress (i.e. pants/jacket combination with or without waistcoat). And most of the time here when someone says "formal", they imply tuxedo jacket, frilly shirt, and patent leather shoes, which I really have never liked much, myself.

This would be my preference for most occasions other than those specified as "Black Tie" (I'd go with a PC in that case)

When I get married, it will be in a Montrose. Also, at Black tie events, one could wear a Montrose. Dancers also wear them.

Think of the kilted equivalent of a tuxedo and a conservative business suit.

They're not implying, they're specifying; that's precisely what "formal" means in men's attire (personally, I'll pass on the frilly shirt in favor of a pleated one).

OK that clears that up, thanks much ! I appreciate the tuxedo/conservative business suit analogy, I can get that.
