Historical Scotland Hector name
Not sure where else to post this, but the 'heraldry' portion seems to be the closest.
I'm in the process of naturalizing as a US Citizen (been in the system for almost 2 years now...USCIS can be slow at times) and I've been debating whether or not to adopt a new name at the time of naturalization.
See, I've never been a fan of my given name, Hector. And for reasons not relevant to this forum, I am not very keen of my father's side of my ancestral genetic pool.
So, I've been thinking about a typical scot name followed by either my mother's surname Huidobro-Young or simply Young.
Now, while researching possible names, it turns out the name Hector is listed as one of the typical Scottish names. Heck, even a few famous scottish Hectors are listed here and there.
Macbeth by William Shakespeare was inspired by the accounts of the historical Macbeth as written by...Hector Boece.
Eventually it even became a surname, there is a Hector family.
A famous Hector Gunn, Hector Campbell, Hector MacLaine, Hector Munro, Hector MacLean, Hector MacDonald, etc. you name it, there was a Hector there.
Also found out that Hector was the chosen anglicized version of the gaelic name Eachann.
Who knew...I guess I'll keep Hector after all.
Still debating whether to go Huidobro-Young or simply Young.
Hector Young sounds good.

Another for Hector!
A few famous Scottish Hectors:
"Fighting Mac" -- Hector MacDonald:
http://pw1.netcom.com/~reincke/homepage.html
At the Battle of Inverkeithing, Sir Hector Maclean fought for the Royalists supporting Charles II against Cromwell's Ironsides. When Maclean and his men were surrounded and being assaulted by the English, legend says that eight clansmen leaped in front of Sir Hector in turn to protect him, shouting "Another for Hector!", which became the slogan of the Macleans.
And I would be remiss if I forgot Hector Naismith MacDonald, Laird of Glenbogle!
Regards,
Todd

Hector Young... It sounds fine to me. Hector kind of has a bite to it and Young sounds smooth.
Hope all goes well in becoming a citisen and congratulations for when you get there.

I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Wow - your office must be slow. My son submitted his in Seattle in April and has his interview in September. Mine back in 2002 took about six months. Guess it's just the luck of the draw.

As the late Sir Iain Moncrieff of that Ilk said on more than one occasion, "descent is descent." Taking your mothers name (Young) is not only permissible, it is quite common in legal and heraldic practice. Hector Young has quite a nice ring to it.

Sorry to hear about the snail's pace of the process, but I second MacMillin's opinion. (in the movie Local Hero a character is sent to Scotland to do some business, because his name was MacIntyre. Seems his father emigrated from Hungary, and choose the name because he thought it was more "American" Hope everything goes smoothly from here on.

Congrats! Don't feel bad, mine took over 5 years - thanks to INS cutbacks by a certain leader hailed as the 'Great Communicator' (?) By the time my interview was finally called, I could hardly remember who Leif Erikson was! (Yep! They admitted it wasn't Columbus!). I didn't know I could change my name at that time?
Hmmm! 'Rock Braveheart',?
'Percival Worthington-Smythe"?,
"Butch Mc Gregor"?,
"Egbert Schnerdenheimer"?,
"Bill Smith"?
such exotic choices I could've had! Sigh!!!!

The first Scottish Hector that came to my mind was "Fighting Mac" (as Todd mentioned) - Major General Sir Hector MacDonald. I think Hector Young has a fine ring to it, but you're the one who'll be living with it, so choose well! Congratulations on your upcoming naturalization.
