Favorite NON-Clan tartans?
Me?
Scottish National. I had a five-yard Scottish National kilt that I threw in for years. I'll probably get another one, someday
Holyrood (I really like Holyrood)... and
Capercaillie of course. My Capercaillie kilt from M'Lady Chrystel is the nicest kilt I own. I just wore it to the Opera.
One tartan I wear a lot which is only very peripherally Scottish....California State Tartan.
--------------------------------
What with all the hullaballoo over wearing the tartan of a clan that you don't have connections to (I have MacNicol and Lindsay kilts...no connection to them) I just thought I'd bring up the question. You know...sort of to illustrate the fact that we DO have choices.

This of course doesn't include my digital camoflage kilt...predator camouflage kilt...and charcoal hemp/polyester box pleat kilt, but then, those aren't tartans, eh?

Basically all my kilts are "non-clan" district or fashion tartans;
Caledonia
American Heritage
Texas Bluebonnet
Ireland's National
X-Marks
Nightstalker
Irish National
All Ireland Green
Irisher
or solid colors;
Saffron
Black
I guess my (current) favorites are the Ireland's National and Texas Bluebonnet.

That's assuming my military tartan kilts are sort of clan tartans - Navy, Army, RAF...

I really like the Maple Leaf tartan and it rots my socks that it isn't the official tartan of Canada. In fact, there is no official tartan for Canada... though there are official tartans for most of the provinces.
The symbolism of the colours in the Maple Leaf tartan reflecting the actual life cycle of a maple leaf is stirring. I also like that it is asymmetrical and yet somehow balanced.
I'm quite proud of my own recent design: the New World Irish tartan. I designed it for a contest, which I won I won!

Non Clans
Its getting to be a long list, but here are the favorite ones I actually own or have on a short list to purchase.
I also have a Scottish National (import PV) that I really like, it's just a good solid tartan to me. . I too am considering a Wool kilt in it someday
Just received my Auld Scotland (Lochcarron) kilt last week
Next will be a Cavan County (H.O.E)
Manx Hunting (H.O.E.) and Holyrood (Marton Mills) as money allows in the future.

Many good tartans listed already.
I like MacDonald of the Isles for it's military look even though it's actually not.
I love Isle of Skye for the subtle and beautiful blend of colours.
I am calmly comforted by the hushed earth tones and simple sett of Brittany Walking

Connemara Tartan
I admit to my bias, it is one of my favorite places on earth, but I like the Connemara tartan and am just disappointed that it is not made in kilt weight.
A number of my other faves have been mentioned already.
