Cape question
I am looking into getting an Inverness cape. I am wondering, how important are they when it comes to cooler weather and wearing a kilt? Would normal long coats or raincoats look ridiculous with a kilt? I have a very nice wool long coat that my wife got me last year. But would it look bad with my kilt this coming fall and winter?
I guess I'm trying to justify to myself spending that much money (almost a thousand ) on a cape.

You have to ask yourself, how much wear are you going to get of an inverness cape? Are you going to be outside a lot where you require the warmth that such a cape offers or would it just be getting from the house to the car, car to where you heading (friends, theatre, dinner)
Having followed your threads, there appears to be a lot of other items that you want before you need an cape. You say that you have a nice overcoat that is probably the same length that an inverness cape would be, so both would be covering up the kilt anyways, until it was taken off. My tuppence is that you leave acquiring the cape until you have all the basics covered and maybe a few of the discretionary ones too.

Any overcoat you have will do perfectly well over Highland attire and most any winter coat you own will work perfectly well with the kilt.

Thank you all for replying. Downunder, I do believe you hit the nail on the head. While I desire the cape, what I have is perfectly suitable for this coming winter. There are a few bits and bobbles I'd like to get sooner than the cape, like another kilt or two. The kilts I have no are the casual kilts from USA Kilts. I wish a more traditional kilt, either a 5 or 8 yard kilt. While I do love the casual kilts from USA Kilts, I want a kilt without velcro. The casual was a good first kilt for me but I'm ready to move on now.
And thank you Riverkilt for giving me jonesing feelings about coats and capes even worse...lol. I know that I need to slow down and enjoy the journey. I am like a kid in a candy store sometimes...lol

Check over at Sportsman Guide for the military surplus. They have a number of surplus great coats. For example a Dutch coat for about $40 (US)

If you get an Inverness, there's nothing that says you can't wear it with your britches. It's another option for whatever you wear for warmth in the winter.

How about a pic of you wearing it with a kilt? Your question is pretty difficult to answer without such.
I rarely ever have need of a long heavy winter overcoat since I live in a temperate clime. But I do have a WWII US Army overcoat that does quite well with the kilt. But it can look a tad costumish, what with its obvious military pedigree. But one thing I do like about it is that it comes down to mid-calf on me. Any long coat that doesn't at least cover the knees isn't going to be of much use with a kilt, in my opinion. And plus, if a coat covers the kilt but doesn't cover the knees, it can look a bit weird when you walk around with it buttoned up. People might think you're a flasher or something.
I'm in agreement with the others. An Inverness cape should be pretty low on the priority list. Make sure you've got the kilt you want, Argyll jackets, sporrans, hose, and all the other goodies you will get a lot of use from first. Considering the high cost of an Inverness cape, it would be silly to invest in one when the "basics" aren't yet covered.

Ask and you shall receive. This is the coat over my MacQueen tartarn that I wore today (didn't wear the coat as it's still too warm for me).
