Black Stewart tartan pleated to the various stripes

If this has been discussed before, please refer me to the post.

I'm trying to determine the resulting look from pleating the Black Stewart tartan to the various stripes:

Pleated to the white stripe in the centre of the tartan, will yield a predominately reddish kilt viewed from the back.
Has any one tried the other stripes:

    Blue
    Green
    Black (between yellow and white)
    Yellow

I know you can pleat to any stripe you want, but as Barb T. said in her book, just because you can doesn't mean you should. Which stripe to pleat to should be determined by:

    1. The desired resulting appearance.
    2. Overall aesthetics of the kilt.

I am looking to get a kilt in the mentioned tartan, pleated to one of the stripes and I'm looking for suggestions.

    Thanks

I've always liked the kilts of the Prince Charles Pipe Band of San Francisco; however their kilts are pleated, I like them! Been seeing those kilts since the 1970s.

I love the look of the Stewart Black pleated to the white/red stripe as it gives the kilt such a presence and a nice "flash" of black when you get the swish moving.

Of course I'm always a bit overboard on the planning measures. I've drawn a scale copy of the tartan and folded the paper. I write the pleating method and pleat size on the paper. The advantage of doing this over the actual fabric is that one can place the several variations side by side. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I like the way City of Washington has theirs pleated (yellow stripe?). I think the white stripe on the red ground makes the back of the kilt look like a different "color" than the apron.

    Elf,

Good suggestion, I'll see if I can get something like that going.

    Kenneth,

    Thanks for the close-up pic.

    Wolfman,

Yep, that would be the effect from one that is pleated to the white stripe in the red, which would give an interesting contrast and flashes of colour when kilt "swishes". I think the pleat to the yellow stripe is more of the look I am thinking about, (at least with this kilt)...subdued with flashes of red when the kilt "swishes".
