I've always said kilts are like jeans, you can dress them up, or dress them down.

That last photo reminded me of a photo of the Dillards (who played the Darling Boys on "The Andy Griffith Show") accepting an award. The photo showed "the boys" wearing black tie -- save their bare feet.

Mitch Jayne, the bass player, used to have a copy hanging in his living room. It was a little surreal to see it and other "candid" photos from the TAGS.

Rest in peace, Mitch.

Actually Glen I have done black tie with such once. I was very involved with Country /Western dance and attended a Victorian Ball during the time "Bram Stoker's Dracula" was playing in the theatre. Inspired by the character of Quincy I wore crisp brand new black jeans, gleaming black boots, a handsome black belt with a silver western buckle, a long cut vintage dinner jacket (not a tailcoat), a tux shirt, a western style bow tie, and a black cowboy hat*. The outfit was very well received. Would I wear such to a non costume event? Probably not.

I guess growing up my entire life in Montana, I've seen black tie with jeans, and can easily imagine it.

In the correct setting (a ranch wedding or stockgrower's convention), it looks good. It wouldn't pass for black tie in any urban setting, though...save Houston or Dallas, perhaps.

I'm sorry but I can not in good conscience agree that this is black tie no matter what Country Living has to say about it. Moreover this thread was meant as a Visual Guide to Formality in Highland Attire. I think there are other places to discuss the merits of jeans perhaps a kilt forum is not one of them.

I also take exception to your claim that it depends how much money you have and whether or not you have anything to prove, that is not the point at all. I am far from rich, the outfits pictured took years to save for. It's about wearing the appropriate outfit and how to do so with one kilt.

I agree it looks horrible. The mismatch makes it look worse!!

• If all four gents were dressed like the fellow on the left, it might be appropriate for a wedding of river raft guides or hikers.
• If they were all dressed like the fellow 2nd from the left, it might be appropriate if the bride and groom were very casual, country people.
• If they were all dressed like the fellow 3rd from the left, it might be appropriate to a bride and groom who were beach bums or river rats.
• ...and if they were all dressed like the fellow on the right, it might be appropriate to Alaskan fishermen or Maine lobstermen.

Not that a more casual application being OK to some people should dilute the entire definition of 'black tie'...it's just as formal as people in some walks of life get.

If any one of the "personalities" in that photo were real people and not paid models, they might say, "I'm sorry but I can not in good conscience agree that wearing ghillie brogues or wingtips is black tie no matter what XMarks or GQ has to say about it!" ;)
