First time out in a kilt
I would like to share my experience as encouragement to those of you who haven’t ventured forth in public in a kilt yet . Today I finally decided to go on a walk-about in my kilt.( Previously I have only worn the kilt at a St Andrews Society function) So off I went to the grocery store in my Russell tartan tank, semi dress sporran, red golf shirt, with red flashes to match. As I walked across the parking lot into the store, not one head turned, no wolf whistles, nothing. I went in the store bought a couple of items, nothing. Everyone acted so normally, as if they see guys walking around in kilts everyday. It was actually unsettling. So I decided that I would venture further afield. I went to the local shopping mall to see a friend that occasionally wears the kilt, but so far, not at work. I went in and spoke with one of his female co-workers, she didn’t even bat an eyelid. I then headed home. I made a stop at the liquor store to get my wife a bottle of wine, as I walked into the store the clerks eyes lit up and he said “man you look sharp.” I thought at last!! He then said do you play the bagpipes? I love the pipes…. We had a brief conversation about bagpipes, kilts and highland games. Suffice it to say I will have to pay him another visit to provide him with further information on the kilt. So all in all it wasn’t too bad of a day. I don’t know what I was worrying about all this time.

Rusty, that's pretty much how it's been for alot of us, a total nonevent. You'll get a comment or two over time, but most people really don't much notice or care.

Good for you. Being cilted in public keeps getting easier the more you go out.

I actually get more looks and head turns from adolesents. Very rarely, I get an adult that takes a second look.
The best comment to date was from some guy at the Navy Exchange Mini-mart nearest my house: "Man... I wish I had the cojones to wear one of those." I was wearing the kilt in my avatar at the time.

Yup, as mentioned, its usually a non-issue.
Currently I only have UKs, but I seem to get the most comments (nearly all positive) when I wear my green camo UK. So I usually save it for the weekends.

Congratulations on your first kilted outing. I'm glad it went well. As others have said, it's usually a nonevent. It took me 8 months of wearing the kilt full time to get a wisecrack recently from a teenage boy. If and when that happens to you, don't let it stop you, as Kilted KT said, when in groups they are trying to impress themselves.

I think I've had something like three, total even vaguely unpleasant experiences being kilted, compared to literally scores of positive ones.
It's a non-issue, but of course we don't know that, the first time!
good on ya for getting out and giving it a go.

Great job! It just goes to show all one needs to wear the kilt is to hold your head high and show good pride in yourself and in your heritage! (You slink and believe me they'll blink)
BTW I'm the one Rusty came to see at work and not a word was said to me about a kilted Gent looking for me! I do believe my dear co-workers were completly unfazed.
Bill
May all your blessings be the ones you want and your friends many and true.

My first time wearing a kilt in public was as part of a Halloween costume. I still wear that kilt, even though the thing "closes" the wrong way. I dunno what I was thinking when I put the Velcro on such that the "open" was on the right.
Now that I know more...
At this point, though, it is a total non-event. The peaople at the Navy Exchange Mini-mart don't even flinch anymore.
