    The Dollar...the dollar....

Oh, rat$#!+...I finally order a kilt from a company in Scotland and the US dollar takes a swan dive in the currency market.

I'm listening to the BBC World News broadcast on NPR and they're going on about how it's cheaper for the Brits and the Euros to fly over here - to NEW YORK, fer cryin' out loud - and do their Christmas shopping. Apparently the whole damn country is now Walmart!

And, of course, the kilt order is "subject to currency fluctuation"...great!

    Timing is everything.

Ouch. I just checked the exchange rate. The pound is worth almost two bucks.

    Good luck, man.

It's not all so bad. In July, £1 was at $1.836 and today it is at $1.948.

I have been minding it and if the dollar loses much more, I'll be transferring some funds back out of my Royal Bank of Scotland accounts.

Hey...I've said on a couple of occasions "what was all that NAFTA b*ll$3!+ about if our Canadian neighbors get stuck with tariffs all the time?". Not that a strict parity between the US and Canadian dollars would be a good thing but c'mon...it's the longest undefended border in the world for a reason! Makes a person understand how smuggling can become an attractive proposition....not that ANYBODY would ever do such a thing....

Actually, it's rare that we get hit with a tariff charge for stuff coming across the border. We do get hit with GST (national 6% sales tax) on most things, though.

The big kick in the ummmm...errrr...pants is the exchange rate on the dollar. It's not too bad right now, but a couple of years ago it was ridiculous! IIRC in 2002-2003 the Canuck dollar was only worth about 60 cents US. Now it's sitting about 88 cents. Par would be nice. Maybe I should petition the Canuck government about that. The higher our dollar, the more kilts and accessories I could order out of the US.
