    Montreat (NC) Scottish Society Gala

A few pics from tonight's Montreat Scottish Society gala. In attendance were well over 100 members of the society and the Montreat Pipes and Drums. Wonderful appetizers and dinner, music, and a properly-presented haggis.
I thought some of you would like to see a few pics. This event took place in Assembly Inn for those familiar with Montreat.

My mother and I in front of the ice sculpture.

    Edest son (MadBagpiper) and I.

Some of the crowd during dinner.

Doug and Darcy Orr, who are co-authoring a book with Fiona Ritchie (NPR host of "The Thistle and Shamrock" radio show) on the musical connection between Scotland and the Appalachians. They played and sang, and provided informative commentary from their research.

    Altogether a wonderful evening!

Did they give any idea as to when their book would be published? I've read about their project before, but I'd like to know so I can secure copies for my work and for my personal library.

I know Doug and Darcy -- Doug recently retired as President of Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, and I attended there for three semesters as an undergrad (I transfered to WCU after I learned enough math to calculate that I would graduate with $40,000 in debt if I stayed at WWC!).

Anyway, Doug and I shared an interest in Celtic Music. In fact I had a Celtic music radio program while I was there, and Doug provided some of his band's CDs for me to play. He also (before I had the show) lent me several of his Dougie MacLean CD's and really got me hooked on him.

It's kind of hard to tell in the pic, but I am assuming that Doug is wearing his Warren Wilson College tartan kilt. I don't know if you noticed or not, but it's a 4 yard box pleated kilt. Bob Martin made it for him (I assume). This was long before I was making kilts.

Anyway, when you see them again, tell them I said hi!

    Aye,
    Matt

    Matt,
Yep, that is the WWC tartan in Doug's kilt and Darcy's sash. My wife now works at WWC. Small world.

Many thanks, TH! That would be most appreciated!

I am hoping that my sophomore seminar class on the geography & culture of the Ozarks will make next Spring, and if so, I am trying to collect a large amount of material on related subjects. Since so many Ozarks residents came from the Appalachians & the Scots-Irish, that would certainly be a "must-have" title.

Perhaps I could persuade my dean that I need to take research trip to Western NC?

joining the Montreat Scottish Society. I think you just helped
    sign me up.
