    Pocket watches with a kilt?

I don't like wristwatches, and I don't like the un-classy humiliation of having to look at my mobile phone for the time. With trousers, a pocket watch is easy to wear, because there are pockets. With a kilt, I have yet to figure out a good workaround.

Does anybody else here use a pocket watch? How do you do it? Eventually, I'll probably get a Custom Thorfinn to solve this problem, but that is years down the road. In the meantime, is there any way I can rig a watch to something, perhaps with an easy modification of something?

    Thanks,
    Matt!

p.s. The watch I have is even made of silver, so it would match the kilt so well!

Wear a vest? Pocket watches originally went in the vest pocket, not the trouser pocket. It's only we moderns, who no longer routinely wear vests, who have started puttin' 'em in there.

Oh yeah, I forgot to say besides that! If I'm really dressed up, of course that is what I'd do, especially to get that chain look. I was talking about when I'm dressed casually. I would just remove the chain and drop it into the sporran, but that seems not just a little risky to me, all dropping it in among pens and keys etc.

I've seen cheap watches that have a clip you can attatch to a belt loop... you could get one of these and hang it from your sporran belt or hangers, or something... and at about $20, you could afford to drop one of these in your sporran and not worry about it.

I've just attached the fob/clip to the buckle and simply tucked it into the band of the kilt, between my shirt and the kilt. It always seem to hold it just fine and even if it does slip, it can't go far because it's attached to the buckle. Of course, I've got a bit of a gut so that helps as well...

But I still prefer to wear a vest when I've got a pocket watch....

    Make sense?

    Edit to add: you can have one of the custom leather folks make you something like is shown here;

Just make the belt loop larger for a kilt belt or whatever you wear.

I perfer a pocket watch and have been comtemplating a leather pocket for the watch. This is especially for when not wearing a kilt belt. The design I have going in my mind is similar the the pocket show in the link Thunderbolt gave. However, I would make the flap use to close the pocket longer and have it bend backwards. This pocket would go between the inner and outer apron and the flap would inside the kilt. With the flap going over the top of the inner apron, this would keep the pocket from falling out and help in locating the pocket.

I would probably make the pocket section so that it had a couple of layers of leather around the edges to help keep the top of the pocket open.

Or you could be very lazy and find one of the metal clips to replace the leather flap. I don't like this idea because of the probaility that I would stab myself with the metal clip.

I hope this makes some sense. I can see it in my mind but I think it is getting cofused on the way to my fingers.

I have probably added ten pocket watch pockets to kilts. Some were under the apron, some were welted pockets between the side slash pocket and rear pocket, some were just under the waistband. It's not that hard to do. You just need to decide where the watch would be comfortable for you and then cut a hole in your kilt. Scary, but easily doable.

    I wear the kilt because:

You could use something similar to "sporran hangers/suspenders", I'd suspect.

You could just wear a vest and use the vest pockets...I personally like a vest because it makes one look trim.

I just ordered one of these in Navy:

...they also seem to have a couple of extra inside pockets...an advantage when wearing the kilt.

Our Chicago Transit Authority Bus Drivers used to wear pocket watches in a leather holder on their belts. The watch was "upside down" in the holder so that they could just glance down at their laps and see the time. Haven't seen one of these lately...I see something like it here:

once upon a time my brother made me a leather pouch that fits on my belt. The watch fits in there, the chain hooks to where ever I find convienant (sp). I wish I still had it.
