My First Kilted Outing
I wore my kilt for the first time out of the house on December 26. It was only a quick trip to the grocery store, but I felt the longer I waited the more nervous I would get.
I didn't notice any "looks", but I'm sure there were some from behind my back. At one point, I thought I heard the word "kilt" from behind me. It didn't sound negative, more like just an observation, so I didn't turn around.
While in the produce section, a man walked past and said "You sure are brave wearing that, and I don't mean just the cold." I smiled and told him that I hadn't had any negative comments yet. He said that was good and added that he had Scottish heritage and something about wanting to wearing a kilt. I have to admit that I was so prepared for negative comments that I wasn't sure what to say in response to a positive one. I completely forgot about mentioning this website (please forgive me).
I'm now looking forward to going out again kilted and I'll be more prepared for any positive comments that may come my way.

Congratulations! I very rarely hear anything negative about my kilts, and I wear them to the store all the time. I hope you do continue to wear that kilt, and I'm sure you will have other kilts in the future. Good luck.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…

Now that you have done the Grocery are you ready to do the Dayton Hamvention kilted? You will quickly find other kilties coming up to you to start a conversation whether they are currently kilted or not. This is my experience here in the city of Boston on the Buses, trolleys and subway trains. Congratulations and enjoy!

I haven't been to the Dayton Hamvention yet, but it is on my list of things to do. My wife is an amateur also, so maybe I can talk her in to doing as a vacation one year. When I go, I'll go kilted!

It gets easier from here on out once you have taken the first step.
Speaking of the Hamvention (This is a convention of Amateur Radio Operators held in Dayton, Ohio). There is a gentleman from, if I remember, Florida that attends the Hamvention in a kilt. I did not see him last year. He is a member of this board from what I recall. That is the only kilt I can recall.
In November I was at the Ft. Wayne, Indiana, hamfest. One guy in a USAKilt. I spoke to him briefly but forgot his name.
I was out in my denim kilt today. I had nothing in the house for breakfast so I went out. After that went shopping at one of the big box stores. No issues at any of the places I stopped. People may take a double look because you just don't see many kilts around. Most people know what a kilt is so I don't expect any issues when I am wearing one. The more you wear it the more comfortable you will be in crowds. You will see it is not an issue.

Chase... As much as I would love to attend the Kilt Night on the 10th, Houston is a little far from San Angelo... About 400 miles
If we ever plan a trip to Houston, I'll let you know. Thanks for the invite, however.
