Athletic kilt question
I have been to a few Celtic/Highland festivals and while they haven't had games they have had demonstrations...in the ones I've been too the atletes don't seem to be wearing traditional kilts, they've worn unpleated wraps with very little overlap, and a bit shorter. Almost like (and i dread to say this because the last thing I need is a telephone pole tossed through my bay window) a wrap around skirt...(cringes and waits for the sound of smashing glass...no?...ok then) Is this a normal garment for athletics? To be fair it does seem to allow more movement while giving the apearence of traditional garment. Thanks.

First of all, I must say upfront that I do NOT compete in any Games. But as a bystander, it strikes me that it's the shorts competitors wear under their kilts which they take more seriously. The kilts usually (though I'm sure not always) seem to be worn only to comply with Game rules.

I suspect your describing the standard kilt manufactured by sportkilt (see sponsor link at top of page.)
Best regards,

I do compete so I can at least tell you how things are at the games I've been in. A lot of the athletes wear Sport Kilts, or something similar because they are lightweight, easier to clean and cheaper so you don't have to worry as much about tearing them up. I wear SK's and love them for the games.
One of the rules is that you have to wear a kilt, so if someone just shows up and wants to play, we'll find a "kilt" somehow. It may just be some cloth we find, or whatever is available, but we'll get them into something that will qualify as a kilt.
I have seen quite a few homemade "kilts" being worn and some are better than others. Some, as you noticed are really nothing more than skirts but again, if it works for them and lets them have fun with us, we don't care.
On the other hand, I know guys that will only wear their handsewn wool kilt in their clan tartan to compete. I've even seen a guy throw while wearing his sporran and big belt.

Asking at a safe distance...
Thought i'd better ask here in the safety of my home than to approach an athlete and ask..

Yeah, those sound like Sportkilts, and it's really the perfect venue for them.
Personally I wear either my Stillwaters when competing or a Utilikilt but I am the rare exception.

Don't worry about it. The big guys just look scary.
Really, most everyone that competes will be willing to talk to someone that shows interest. Just don't approach during the middle of an event.

I just started competing this year. Stone Mtn was my first game I did the clinic Sunday morning, then competed in the clan challenge Sunday afternoon.
Last weekend I went to Ft. Lauderdale and competed in Division B. The guys were great, they gave me good advice and cheered me on.
I wear my first kilt which is a SportKilt "Leatherneck" It's light weight and It won't bother me if it gets damaged.
This is from Stone Mtn

I am going to Orlando to compete this weekend. Wish me luck
