Don't worry about it. The big guys just look scary.
Really, most everyone that competes will be willing to talk to someone that shows interest. Just don't approach during the middle of an event.

I just started competing this year. Stone Mtn was my first game I did the clinic Sunday morning, then competed in the clan challenge Sunday afternoon.
Last weekend I went to Ft. Lauderdale and competed in Division B. The guys were great, they gave me good advice and cheered me on.
I wear my first kilt which is a SportKilt "Leatherneck" It's light weight and It won't bother me if it gets damaged.
This is from Stone Mtn

I am going to Orlando to compete this weekend. Wish me luck

Smaller guys like me have to watch out. Around lunch time the big guys eyes glaze over and everything starts looking like a turkey leg!

I have also been to a demonstration, where to try your hand at an event you needed to be kilted. I was wearing my Amerikilt as a spectator. being already kilted, was invited into the fun. The coaching and support that is provided is superb. I actually got the Caber to flip properly on my second attempt, having never tried anything like it before. While asking questions about proper form, one of thecoaches advised if competeing it is not best regimental.... Oh.
