Kilted in the snow down south
After making my morning run to the post office for my shipping while wearing my Khaki Canvas and a Rob Roy style sporran I made a quick run by KOHLS to check the latest clearance specials. At 60% off I found some great shirts to compliment my kilts. Then, with snow and ice coming today, it was on to the grocery where I found a sizable percentage of the town frantically buying everything possible to survive the fierce storm. We are expecting somewhere between one to two inches of snow and that means a full scale panic mode here. Trouble is that folks around Atlanta inevitably end up on the expressways when the sleet has fallen and that always results in countless numbers of accidents.
At the grocery there were many compliments re the kilt and even one young man who became an instant convert. One older fellow was really moved. Did I detect a slight hint of residual accent there? And, of course, there were the many northerners who enjoyed the sharing of their jokes about, "when we lived back in Michigan......." A nice outing, and I DO love spreading the gospel of the kilt!

Hope you weather the storm OK - Nice comments are always welcome. Although I haven't had a comment one way or the other for weeks. It is eather the further wimping of our society, or I need to find new places to go?

Ted, I guess I might survive this! I lived for six months of a Madison, Wisconsin winter when they said it was one of the worst on record. Seems, I remember something like 97 total inches that never melted. Here though, the sleet makes things even more interesting and people seem to be driven to get out and drive when the roads are glazed over. Worst thing is when the transformewrs start popping and the power lines fall. Doubt we will have that with only a day of freezing weather. A GOOD day to enjoy my new kilt and move myself to finish the last chapter in my new book!

Snow... what is this "snow" you speak of... Just joking. There's a mountin right over there that gets snow on the top when it rains down here in the winter. It's kind of a Superstition though. Good luck with the blizzard of aught eight.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

James,
Here in Cartersville, Georgia seeing a kilt is still very much a novelty. Seems most just aren't quite sure what to make of it, whether I wear a tartan or the casual style. Wearing the sporran does seem to help with both as that clearly identifys this as a kilt. I relish those times when folks are overwhelmingly positive and complimentary in coming up to ask questions. I have GOT to get some business cards for MENSPLACE! The "good old boys" still have the occasional chuckle, but the ones that admittedly get next to me are the more reserved and stand-offish ones with the look of anger and judgement. Either way, the is a certain vicarious pleasure in stirring up paradigms through simply wearing them as much as possible!

Good luck with all. I'll just throw in that it has snowed a tiny tiny bit down here in the desert (on the outskirts of Phoenix), but only once in a decade of blue moons, LOL!

Recently, I have sent canvas kilts to a couple up in Yellowknife in northern Canada and a Black Watch to a gentleman in Barrow, Alaska. From my living once up in Wisconsin I think that the people in such climates just become acclimated and learn to make the best of it. Actually, they seemed a lot more geared to the outdoors in the winter than people here in the south. As for the level of comfort, I agree with some recent postings that with a warm hat and coat one can stay plenty warm with a kilt in the winter. Surely Scotland isn't balmy like the photos recently posted from Hawaii.

Indeed. Reminds me of a time in the 80's I went to visit a friend of mine in So Cal right after new years. I just left an area (NW Washington) that was knee deep in snow & in the 20's and stepped off the plane in LAX where it was 65 (@ 12:am).
I started stripping off my leather m/c jacket & flannel shirt to my tee!
Should've seen the looks from my friend & everyone else who were walking around with sweaters etc on because it was "cold"
Your right though about becoming acclimated. At my old house we had to go around the house to get to the laundry room, so I've worn a kilt more than once outside after the Fraser Valley winds blow thru here. It does get a wee bit cold, but I more or less get used to it. Of course I would also go out there in the middle of winter in cammo shorts & barefoot too!

Ah...the great Southern Grocery Store Rush! Even here in the NC mountains the threat of snow sends everyone to the grocery. I've often wondered what they do with all that bread and milk!
