For someone who is a total fabric junkie... but in total denial... tripping through that ebay store was dangerous and expensive (though not quite as expensive as full retail.

) That is quite the place, because hidden among all the pieces of lightweight 8 oz and 10/11 oz wool are some real jewels of 13 oz kilting tartans. There are even a few 16 oz ones, such as Pride of Scotland Ancient and Black Watch. Unfortunately, I could not buy them all...

Well I got burned!! The Glen Craigloch fabric arrived today. I had previously sent the seller a question asking if it had a kilting selvage. He responded that it did.

What I got was a raw edge that will need hemming if I use it. Transatlantic returns are problematic, so I might just have to eat it.

Caveat emptor!

Quality is very nice. But the fabric was listed as 13/14oz. The 2 meters weigh 30oz and that's double width, so I would say it's a little on the light side. But then, I don't really know how to calculate fabric weight. Color is much more muted than the photo on eBay, but I really prefer that. If I can't negotiate a return I will keep it and see how it works with a hem.

I hope that you are not intimidated and leave accurate feedback. Other Ebayers need to know that that merchant is selling cloth as kilt material that doesn't have a kilting selvedge.

3.7 metres is actually 4 yards. Being double width is enough for an 8 yard kilt but why not call it 7.45m?

I understood that the "standard" for weight is per yard, double-width. So 2 meters at 30 oz is 2.18 yards, 13.75 oz. Sounds like decent fabric: I hope that it works out for you!

I'm sorry for Brian's experience.

I'm bought yardage of the lightweight tartans from them, and the quality of fabric I received was excellent. Their service was top notch, and the prices were great. I've got 4yds of Weathered Douglas in house, and another 10 yards of Ancient Douglas on the way.

I bought 3.7 meters of weathered MacPherson back in October, it was advertised as 16 oz and it was in fact. The selvedge was also fine. It was first class fabric in all respects. I made myself a reverse kinguisse from one half, and sent the other half of it to Matt for a box pleat that should be here this month sometime. I am looking forward to it.

I am sorry about your experience as well, but the seller was a pleasure to deal with, and everything "as advertised" in my experience with him.
