Attention: US Marines (and French), intel needed
Heard a story awhile back of a guy getting a piece of lumber from an old growth tree from Belleau Wood (one there during the famous battle) and sending it to his son over in Iraq. The story said that it was a program the French do every year. They cut down ONE tree and plant a new one in it's place. The lumber is given to US Marines (and vets) as a thank you.
ANYBODY have ANY information on this? I've tried contacting several sources(USMC Public Affairs, French park services, etc) but have never gotten a reply.
I have several project's in mind if I can get a piece, no mater the size.
Large piece: a stand for my NCO sword
Medium piece: pistol grips for a M1911 and/or a M9
Small piece: a Sgian Dubh with NCO sword like etching. (to be worn with a "Leatherneck kilt")
Any and all help is GREATLY appreciated. This would be up there with getting sand from Iwo Jima (I still call it that)

You might want to try contacting the superintendent at the military Cemetery there.

I have a piece of wood (a samll branch peice actually) but I hand gathered my piece on my own. I have never thought of a fitting thing yet to do with it. It is on the shelf beside my jar of black sand from Iwo.
I've never heard of the program that you mentioned, but I'll put the word out to my group or retired juggies, and the active duty types too and see what I can find out.
It would be a neat idea if true.
It almost seems too good to be true.

I have sand from Iwo Jima and water from the shores of Tripoli. A stone from the halls of Montezuma and a branch from Belleau Wood would round out my collection nicely.

Top, you are the Man!
For a Hollywood Marine, you're OK.
I washed all the Danang mud off I could, 'cause I never wanted to see it again. However, now . . .
